Period Appropriate Handlebar Plugs?

What would be the appropriate plugs for a Mid-60’s Italian bike? Pictures would be helpful.

I'd say that these would be appropriate. Or one of many of the black plastic/nylon copies.

Depends.
Italian city? Italian racy? Bar tape? Bike 100% original? Image you want to present?

on my robur from 1956 i chosed the old cork plugs.
but honestly i chosed them for the looks , i don't know if they are period-appropriate.

will be really nice if someone post a complete list of the plugs type and the relative year.

I'm a cork guy, myself. cheap and plentiful, I learned after dinging at TT with a handlebar swing to always keep something in to protect against having that happen again.

Not sure if it would be 60’s but nothing says Italian like Campa.

And repros are available in flag colors, brand name, etc.
Or

Benotto for ribbon or vinyl, plain silver metal, etc

I wasn't sure, but they are in the 1963 Ron Kitching catalog, so good to go.

-----

also Rampinelli, REG brand model 273, most commonly seen in off-white but also produced in colours

these are not strictly speaking "plugs" as they are caps designed to fit over the end of the bar

VELOX are nice, heavy and of the wrong national origin for an Italian machine

GASLO tend to run ~120USD/pr on ebay

both of the Campag models illustrated above are far too late for a 1960's era machine

I suggest you look at Speedbicycles Museum. Sort for the period, then look at the detailed photographs for bikes with the aesthetics you like.

I like these on all my CV bikes. I don’t buy them from Amazon but they had the better pic.

My Fiorelli has plastic caps similar to 70's Cinelli caps, they are white and have concentric rings, tape starts on the outside of them and works it's way forward. I think they are original.

a once cheap item, cheapest today would probably be Benotto caps as used under their celo tape.

velox would from time to time show up, but good luck finding "white"

I do hope you got to empty the bottle that the Domaine Drouhin cork came from.

Thx guys, a wealth of information for sure. I didn’t think about it, but when I got it it had Red REG 273 caps… are these likely original? The tape seemed glued on, and looked and smelled like old stale medical tape. But, I’m not going to use red with the white cotton tape I chose, and I’m wrapping the bars top to bottom. The bike was completely Italian except for the pedals, they’re Lyotards. So, a bit of a deviation from Italian is not out of the question. White Velox might be good, and varnishing the tape and adding cork is cool. The stem & bars are Ambrosio, so Cinelli plugs seem inappropriate. The bike is really a wall hanger. You’ve given me lots of food for thought.

The chrome metal one in the middle is an example of the type I used back then. Simple, stylish, and *light*!

iirc, bar-end plugs were required for racing, when attention was paid, for safety reasons.

Whatever came with the wrap, or the bike. I don’t remember the older tape coming with plugs.
