Period Appropriate Handlebar Plugs?
What would be the appropriate plugs for a Mid-60’s Italian bike? Pictures would be helpful.

I'd say that these would be appropriate. Or one of many of the black plastic/nylon copies.

I'm a cork guy, myself. cheap and plentiful, I learned after dinging at TT with a handlebar swing to always keep something in to protect against having that happen again.

Not sure if it would be 60’s but nothing says Italian like Campa.
And repros are available in flag colors, brand name, etc.

I wasn't sure, but they are in the 1963 Ron Kitching catalog, so good to go.

VELOX are nice, heavy and of the wrong national origin for an Italian machine
GASLO tend to run ~120USD/pr on ebay

I suggest you look at Speedbicycles Museum. Sort for the period, then look at the detailed photographs for bikes with the aesthetics you like.

My Fiorelli has plastic caps similar to 70's Cinelli caps, they are white and have concentric rings, tape starts on the outside of them and works it's way forward. I think they are original.
a once cheap item, cheapest today would probably be Benotto caps as used under their celo tape.

Thx guys, a wealth of information for sure. I didn’t think about it, but when I got it it had Red REG 273 caps… are these likely original? The tape seemed glued on, and looked and smelled like old stale medical tape. But, I’m not going to use red with the white cotton tape I chose, and I’m wrapping the bars top to bottom. The bike was completely Italian except for the pedals, they’re Lyotards. So, a bit of a deviation from Italian is not out of the question. White Velox might be good, and varnishing the tape and adding cork is cool. The stem & bars are Ambrosio, so Cinelli plugs seem inappropriate. The bike is really a wall hanger. You’ve given me lots of food for thought.

iirc, bar-end plugs were required for racing, when attention was paid, for safety reasons.
