The great purge #4 Raleigh Record Ace. 1983? SOLD

Sold
Almost original 1983 RRA. Made for the British market, has a sticker from a British bike shop, 27" Raleigh sealed bearing hubbed wheels, matching fenders, original bar tape, Weinmann hoods all cracked(have knock off replacements), pedals w straps. I replaced the front Vx derailleur to match the Cyclone RD that someone had swapped out, I think it originally was Vx front and back. $200 +shipping. Takes a 27.2 seat post.

Tell me about those hubs. It looks as though the red label says "Normandy". If so it opens the possibility of replacing all those ***** Normandy bearings with the sealed versions. Have you taken them apart?

Would you please measure the center-to-center and center-to-top dimensions for the seat tube and the center-to-center dimension of the top tube and post accurate size information for us?

Thanks in advance.

Normandy red label are cup and cone hubs; these replaced the luxe competition and so were one step up from Normandy sport hubs.

Likely a 57 from the catalog. Just my size. I’d have to move a bike to buy this but tempting.

Odd that the catalog calls this color ice green; perhaps not an '83?

1980's Raleigh RAA

That's basically the same frame as the late 70's Raleigh Competition G.S. without the chrome socks.

Raleigh also made a Record model for the French market during that time in red, black and yellow Team Kit using the same Reynolds 531 frame. My 1979 Record has some of the same components: Suntour Cyclone derailleurs and Power Shifters, Normandy Luxe Competition small flange hubs, TDC Continental headset.

What is the crankset marked Raleigh? Stronglight? SR? Nervar?

Raleigh SR Crankset

It's a Raleigh badged Sakae Ringyo (SR) AX-5LASL, APEX-5LA Super Light

https://velobase.com/ViewComponent.a...m=115&AbsPos=7

Those were "melt forged" pressure cast with the spider swagged onto the crank arm. The cranks on my "Record" are Raleigh badged forged Sakae Ringyo SR Royal 5 models.

not just the chrome socks. The drop outs and components as well. This is a very nice bike but I think the Comp. GS is a different bike.

Same Raleigh Frames

Different model bikes but same Reynolds 531 frames, lugs, crowns... The OP's RAA has Suntour dropouts rather than Campagnolo but that's par for the course with Raleigh. Campy dropouts cost twice as much as Suntour back then plus Raleigh was private labeling SunTour derailleurs so they probably got a sweetheart deal.

Here's another variation of that frame, a Record model for the UK market.

Too bad that is not a 25" frame. I am a sucker for a big Raleigh. I have to talk myself out of them regularly. Seeing this was enough to convince me to put my 68 Super Course back together.
