trek 1984 170 frame
I have an opportunity to buy a trek 1984 170 frame / fork in pretty good condition. Not a lot of online info on these. ( these were top of the line with reynolds 753) he wants $500. Do you think it's worth that?

Still learning
Do you mean a 710? In any event, $500 is rich just for the frame/fork.

Thanks guys, I do enjoy collecting rare bikes, but I typically shy away from incomplete bikes as I don't have a lot of era correct parts. I know it's rare so I might pull the trigger. He also has another one without the original fork..56cm, also $500. I will pass along his info if anyone is interested

Well, I went and checked it out...and there was quite a bit of rust on the outside of the bottom bracket (pitting) and quite a bit of paint chipping...in addition it was purple!...He wouldn't budge under $400, so I passed it up. I figured it would take $200-500+ to refinish the frame...at that point I'm in it for $600-1000. I just don't think it's worth it....damn, I really wanted it!

You were smart not to go over your price once you realized that the paint job had serious issues.

He has two of these frames. One has the original 170 chainstay protector, the other is missing the protector, but has the 753 stickers on the seat tube and forks. I was going to run the serial number before buying the frame, but I didn't as I ended up walking away.

It's tempting, but after having it repainted, I'd be in over $800+-..could be higher with imron paint and decals...$800 buys a lot of vintage steel out there.
