Weird Weinmann centre-pull!! Period piece?

Came aross this oddity in a box of NOS parts and I've never seen the like.

Novel idea but didn't catch on I guess.
The blocks move horizontally and it's a heavyweight item at 250g, but it's well made, with a flat plate fixing.
So maybe MTB?

Period?
70s?

Looks very cool, but overly complicated for a center pull.

One of the local shops has bags upon bags of those HP Turbos, NOS. Probably $25-30/ea

truly weird, and one I've never seen before. FMI: what material are the inserts in the cable guides: rubber (to create friction?) or some kind of slippery plastic (to reduce it)?

Some sort of slippery plastic and easy to replace.
They'd probably need to be replaced often.
The actual structure of it must be very stiff.

These were from the mid 80's 'self-actuating' brakes craze.

Cool part, indeed I've never seen anything similar either. May snag those photos for velobase?

You are welcome to use the pics for Velobase, of course.
I was still at the stage of checking it out and it was a fair bet that somebody on BF would know something
Might have some other items of interest, but will PM you about them.

I believe there's a helical mechanism that actuates the pads, I recall reading that they were prone to jamming, but I've never used them myself.

Sorry. They don't make my "Favorite Vintage center-pull" list.

I'm thinking early mechanical disk brake concept, I like them. Probably wouldn't use them on a daily rider though.
