Fixed Gear related weight loss stories
Anybody got any good stories?
A guy I know used to be huge and he started riding fixed and commuted on a 30+ mile a day route with massive hills. He has lost so much weight its ridiculous.

A good way to lose weight is to goto school and eat dining hall food.

I stopped eating refined sugars, drinking caffiene, and drinking alcohol on October 20th.
I started riding atleast 60 miles a week.
I've lost 26lbs.
I was 5'8" 160.

When you read someone's weight loss story, it is important to know how old the person is. I could pretty easily lose 2 pounds a week if I rode 100 miles per week. I had to be a bit careful about what I ate, too. After age 38 my body does not respond the same way. At nearly 62 I can ride 100 miles in a week and lose practically nothing. When people talk about massive loses of body weight in a short period I am suspicious they are still enjoying a young person's metabolism.

I started out as an average looking 5 foot 9 inch 160lbs guy. Now I'm a slightly thinner looking 145lbs guy. I didn't start losing much weight until I started riding rollers. If you get on the rollers for half an hour a day in addition to your normal riding you will get lean quick. I'm pretty lean so I don't think I will lose anymore weight. I've got a 32 inch waist so I guess that makes me really wide framed for my height and weight. I'm still eating as much as ever. I'm 21.

Losing wieght was one of the biggest reasons I started riding again. I was up to about 165 (I'm 5'8") and not getting to the gym as often as I promised myself I would. I bought slicks for my mountain bike, sold my truck and never looked back. Now I'm down to about 145 and lookin gewd.

I lost 21 lbs last summer commuting (mostly fixed), but I got lazy in December after it started snowing because I was riding a heavy, hard-to-ride mtb with gears and I didn't commute as much. I went back up 8 pounds. I really missed my fg, but I couldn't use it for snow riding. Then last week I found a Bianchi San Jose on craigslist, so now I'm back in the game! (And with a longer, harder commute)

152 lbs
i've weighed close to 180 a few times, mostly due to breadsticks and/or 40z. starting monday my commute is going to be about 25 miles per day, so hopefully i'll be able to keep my weight low and my 40 intake high.

after I graduated and stopped rowing (but kept eating) I gained about 40 pounds in 5 months, from 180 to 220. then I started riding a lot more and fixed my diet, and was down to around 170 12 months after I stopped competing. Just turned 24, and I'm back up to 180 now after the holidays/travel/eating/no biking. I'm 6'2".

Its been the opposite for me... I gained so much weight eating in the dining commons. Then I stopped eating meat and moved into my own apartment and I've lost 35 pounds. You guys are all skinny.. I'm 6'1" and 195 and I feel like its a good weight for me.

i will always be thin.
it's just how my metabolism works.
i'm young but i just know it's not going to catch up to me.
i look at my dad, whose around 55-60, barely exercises, eats a lot, and has been 150 for pretty much his entire life.
it's in tha famlee i guess.
cholesterol, on the other hand, is probably going to be a pretty big concern in the future.

I used to laugh at the old timers who told me how blissful youthful metabolism is, that you could eat almost anything. LOL. When I turned 23-24, I noticed a very slight slowdown in metabolism. I noticed another slowdown at about 30 years old. I'm not looking forward to turning 40, but that's still quite a ways off.
The GOOD thing, however, is that if you lift weights, you can easily put on some impressive mass. In college, I struggled to get past 170lbs no matter how much I ate or how heavy I lifted. Last year, I was in the best shape of my life and broke past 190lbs. It's difficult to have two mutually exclusive goals from two hobbies though. When I'm heavier from lifting, I am noticeably slower on the bike. After a few months of biking, I'd intentionally drop weight to be faster (usually end up about 160lbs at end of the season) but end up having tiny arms, which I dislike.

It wasn't really from riding fixed(i hadn't gotten into fixed gears by this time) but when i first got back into biking 6 months ago, i dropped at least 20 pounds(i didn't really ever weigh myself) and all of my older pants are pretty big on me. I'm still a bigger guy for my height(5'9" 215) and i've put some of that weight back on due to the snow and not riding.

6'1" 185. Weight has been fluctuating from 180-190, and is usually at 185. I have gained a lot of mass since I started training in 2006, I used to weigh about 165-170 before I started riding.

I lost a hell of a lot of muscle when I started riding bicycles instead of going to the gym (~2 years ago). I think I actually gained a little bit of that back when I started riding my fixed gear more than my other bikes.
I am now 5'7" and 155-160lbs

Here's a question. Did anyone gain or lose weight after changing their gearing?

funny thing is i dropped 20 pounds in month and a half off my 5'6" frame by not changing my lifestyle except sleeping more and eating the same. wasnt even going through puberty...
anyways, fitness wise i maintain my endurance and (i know this is shallow) six pack by lifting 3 times a day and scheduling my classes far apart so i have to bike farther.
only thing im debating now is if a lower gear is better or a higher gear is. anaerobic or aerobic workout...hmm....
