tis' the season to ride the old ridge route...

before it gets too hot. anyone ride this lately or even semi-recently? did it back in may of 2016
on a coolish day. exactly zero support for up to 15 miles in places. not good for a hot ride but when
the temps are upper 50's-upper 60's, it would be ideal. did it on 23's but i think it would probably be
more comfy/safer rocking 28's.

the article that spurred me to get off my *ss and slap my butt on the saddle:

https://www.latimes.com/business/auto...502-story.html

a recent ride write-up:
Jewel of a Historical Ride: The Old Ridge Route - CiclaValley

i'd like to get back up there and ride it again. real tonic for the soul. lonely and desolate while
simultaneously in view of the 5 freeway for stretches.

Thanks for posting this. I did not see it in my California hill climbing books.

I am thinking about doing that route this Saturday (minus the old ridge route). I have a friend who road that last year. The road is still ride able although they were looking for mixed terrain and that definitely had it not paved 100%.

If anyone is interested, I have a video from last February of Old Ridge Route - it's long, but gives an idea of the terrain for those who haven't been on it before:

Interesting. The old Ridge route. So, where would I park in order to access that road (from the South)? I don't think I'd be riding it for anything more than the experience, meaning, very slow and not coming near to completing it on my old beater mountain bike. It would be fund just to ride around on.

i parked near the intersection of lake hughes rd (freeway exit off the 5) and ridge route rd near the lake castaic entrance. i did it as a loop ride tho.
if you are solely interested in the closed part, it starts just north of templin hwy which is the next exit north on the 5 fwy. take food and 2 water bottles
as there is zero support around and cellular service is spotty at best.
