Fellow roadies...what do you do for a living?
I read a lot of posts...even if I don't reply and I always find it interesting to see people say where they work or what they do. I notice there are quite a few engineers, for example. Shouldn't be a surprise, I guess. We (this forum) are just a slice out of regular society. Even though we spend thousands on bikes, shoes, helmets, lycra short sets, etc...outside of that, we're just regular people that can be seen daily at any Home Depot or Chic Fil A, lol. So...what do you do? What pays for your cycling addiction?
Myself...I am an ASE certified Master Automotive Technician. I graduated from Tech. School, then started out at a dealership. I worked there for a while until I realized that I had too many scruples for the types of things that went on there and also, that working flat rate was going to end with me seriously hurting someone. So, I moved on to an independent shop. Worked there for a long time. It had it's ups and downs, but the work was steady and I knew what I was going to be taking home every week. Thing is, for the work I did, it simply wasn't enough. At age 40, I realized there was no way I could do this for 20 to 25 more years. My body simply wasn't going to hold up. The job is hard on you. Backs, wrists, shoulders can only take so much. So after much searching, I found what I thought would be a happy medium. I now work for an extended warranty company analyzing mechanical claims. I get to work with cars, without having to work ON them. It's a desk job...which has it's pros and cons. I come home clean every evening, don't work in the elements, my body feels great and the money and benefits are awesome. My plan is to retire from here at 60 and ride off into the sunset with my 401k, lol. We'll see how that develops. Your turn...

yeah, I remember reading where you said you were a "materials" guy...I wanted to ask what that meant exactly, but didn't want to derail the post.

I'm a lead pipeline operator for Cimarex Energy. I spend 6 months a year in the middle of nowhere on the Texas New Mexico border and 6 months a year off here in DFW. I was in the marine corps for 12 years and currently studying to be a geologist as well because I'm tired of spending half my life away from my family but love the income I earn doing so and want a normal job with an equal paycheck.

Media Engineer for major entertainment conglomerate. Title sounds fancier than it is. I manage and support all of the media and audio video technology for three facilities. Most people where I work think I'm an IT guy based on the amount of random people that stop me in the hall to fix their email issues. Luckily the solution is reboot 9 times out of 10

I am a landscape architect and applied landscape ecologist. I am an Associate Professor now teaching in Prague. Use to own a consultant company in DC and later Ann Arbor. Have been a roadie since the early 70s. Got in on the mountain bike thing in 1980 and still ride trail but mainly in the late fall and winter to early spring.

I'm a trauma nurse by trade but now I manage an Emergency Department. Over the years I've seen a lot of the aftermath after bad bike crashes and never thought I'd make the switch from MTB'ing but here I am, newly addicted to the road.

Network analyst for the US Attorney's Office. Like someone said above, the name sounds cooler than the job, I'm basically an IT specialist.

I am a civil engineer by academic training, and own a small Engineering, Architecture, and Land Surveying firm in middle Missouri. Been riding bikes seriously for about 15 years. Picked it up again after getting the family mostly raised, and life settled down a little. I am now 56 and am riding more than ever and really enjoy the riding (about 3000 miles a year).
