7 speed cassette won't fit on 8 speed freehub - with spacer

Hi all

I recently picked up a set of MTB wheels and today I tried to put a cassette on, but it was loose when I tightened it up (it wiggled back and forth several mm).

As mentioned, I'm trying a 7 speed cassette on an eight speed freehub. I went to the LBS to pick up the usual spacer, an arrangement I've used before, but despite using the spacer, the cassette wiggles back and forth when installed, like it's too small (I've definitely put all the sprockets on).

The freehub doesn't seem damaged (as seen in the attached picture). Is there anything else that could be causing it?

BTW, it's a Shimano ('groupless') cassette on a no-name hub.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks!

It does look like an 8 speed hub to the naked eye. When I put an 8 speed Sram cassette on my kids modern Mavic wheel with bladed spokes (don't know the model), I had to use a 1 or 2mm spacer that came with the wheel before the cassette would fit snugly. If I left the spacer off the wheel, the 8 speed cassette would be very loose. This wasn't a spacer provided by the casstte, it was a spacer that came with the wheel which was used when I got it.

I am thinking that with a 7 speed cassette, you will need the spacer provided with the freehub and an additional 5mm spacer that takes up the extra cog's worth of space lost by the one less cassette. I'm not sure if 5mm is the right size spacer but I imagine its pretty close.

Why is there grease in the splines?

If your endcap's threads aren't stripped, I guess it just needs a bigger spacer this time. I suppose there could be up to a mm or so tolerance between the freehub body and cassette in the spec, given the cassette is secured by a threaded fitting.
