Even though Deda intro’d the Trentacinque 35mm diameter format several years ago, they don’t seem to have gained much popularity that I can see or read, but then to be on a 10 year production run, someone— other than myself— must be using them. 35mm doesn’t seem to have popped off as a standard either, although there have been a few brands, like Felt. Oddly and unlike the Deda bars, the Felt bars only OS’d the clamp area, not the entire top run, so for my tastes, they rather surrendered one of the best bits of 35mm, the beefier handhold on the tops.

Anyway, I was thinking to replace my gravel bar with a 35mm which is how this topic came to mind; I’m unaware of any 35mm flared drop bars, which is kind of funny since 35mm seems to have taken hold in the MTB segment pretty nicely.

So do you use 35mm drop bars? Had you considered it? What do you like or dislike about the format for road bars?

I have never thought that my 31.8mm bars arent stiff enough. I also like tape on the flats, and these arent designed for tape up there.
Maybe someone who is cranking on their bars in a competitive sprint feels their bars arent stiff enough?...I havent been able to attain that level of power and talent. Kudos to those who are strong and talented enough to need such a design.

35mm bars make for a pretty stiff ride on a MTB. I wouldn't want them on road bike with no suspension. Especially with how narrow road bike bars are in comparison to MTB bars...

They are definitely stiffer than my three other alloy drop bars (two 31.8mm and one 26mm) but that translates as precision and accuracy to me, not discomfort. I don’t notice the 35 to feel harsher than those other bars, but it does feel more direct. It’s not huge in any case, and since I built this bike up with the 35 system from jump street and I haven’t ridden it with a different bar/stem, it’s impossible for me to say how much has to do with the bar and stem specifically, rather than just the differences between different bikes, frame materials, and everything else.

Also, the Deda bars narrow to standard diameter at the ramps, so unlike an MtB bar where you’re gripping in one axis, you’re not typically feeling the full might of the 35mm diameter if you’re riding out on the hoods and drops.

I’m glad they are working for you. MTB bars also narrow back out to standard grip size. Lots of folks say they are too stiff though…

yeah, but when on drop bars on the hoods, handhold is off-axis and generating more leverage from the bar centerline, so I’d bet there’s more flex.

I bought a set of Deda 35.0 aluminum bars and another set of 35.0 carbon bars for a few builds that aren’t done yet.

I am excited to try them but have not tried them yet.

I have a titanium disc bike that I am planning the build on which is getting orange anodized Industry 9 Torch hubs with matte orange ano Velocity Aileron rims. I noticed that KCNC makes their “Reyton” MTB stem in longer road ready lengths (I need a 12cm or at least an 11cm). These take 35.0 bars. The orange one on eBay sold but I might source another for its unique look and it’s ability to run the Trentacinque bars.

I believe Parlee made 35.0 carbon bars & stems for lots of $$$.

In addition to sourcing the orange, angular 35.0 KCNC stem for road, I am considering ordering a custom titanium Chinese 35.0 12cm stem from a Chinese eBay titanium component maker. I’m thinking it would match up well with a layback ti seatpost in a matte ti finish.

Whoa, sounds hot! I like the idea of the orange stem! With the big 35, it’ll look pretty striking either way; the size difference is subtle, but once you realize what’s different, it starts looking massive.
