My protype BB came in the mail today and I installed it. I've never installed a crankset before, but it was pretty straightforward. My question is about the spindle/crank arm interface. I have maybe 4-5mm of spindle showing between the crank arm and bottom bracket shell. I can't seem to push the crank arm down the spindle any further. Is this how your 75/protype bb setup looks?

Also, that's a very common situation with ISO taper spindles, which have a much longer taper section than JIS spindles. Even if an adjustable cup with an external lockring is used, there will be a noticeable gap between the crank arm and the cup / lockring. The installation on my Protype / Sugino 75 looks just like the photo. You should always tighten the crank arm bolts based on torque, and the value I always use is 400 in-lbs (33 ft-lbs) for square taper spindles.

Is there another reason besides price that most go for the protype bb for 75's; like sealed vs loose ball etc? About to buy a set of Sugino's with the matching BB, and if I can get it for cheaper without causing problems that would be great. I was also looking at these for the crank set, Campagnolo – Centaur BB.

I chose the Protype because it's got sealed cartridge bearings and would rather not be bothered with needing to service my bottom bracket.

My little brother is 15, 6' tall, 120 lbs. I try to get him more enthusiastic, maybe interested in racing. His first ride was over 20 miles at around 17/18 mph. He could be a killer climber
Scrod, how do I get a 15 year old really interested in more than just slow party rides? I don't want to force him and give him a bad taste because I pushed him a little too hard.

Oh, well congratulations for being able to save that much. If I ever got to that point, I probably would be afraid to spend it
