Went through this last year. Color and comfort - she has to like both.

My wife cross shopped 52cm Domane SL4 and 52cm Roubaix - both with very similar drive trains. She rode them back to back, and found the Roubaix a much better fit for her based on actual riding. She didn't care about geometry or drive trains or anything else if it just didn't feel right sitting on it.

All the numbers in the world aren't going to mean a thing unless she likes the color and is comfortable on the bike.

Take her to as many stores as you can. Let her touch and feel the offerings, and then buy what she decides is the one for her. It doesn't matter what anyone else's opinions as to what is right for her are.

Spouse also needs to enjoy the same type bike riding as you. If she doesn't she'll never like the bike she needs to get to do the same riding as you.

Mine will never like riding at the cardio levels I like to ride at. So though we've tried getting bikes that might let her half-way keep up with me, they were all failures and they stayed in the garage with little use.

I've decided if we ever talk about riding together again, I'll let her pick out a bike on her own and I'll get a Trek Electra with a 7 or 9 speed rear. They are inexpensive and maybe being on that type geometry will keep my need to go fast hormones in check.

When my wife wanted to buy a Road bike (she has a Devinci MTB bike) all I said was to get minimum 105 Groupset. She came home with a BNIB pink Colnago and was so happy she had an ear to ear grin.

Her bike is far better than any bikes I've ever owned and she doesn't ride nearly as much as I do. When she does ride it's at a very casual pace and rarely changes gears but she loves her bike!

m2244.....let the wife pick her bike while giving her subtle guidance.....

Going through the same process with my wife. What we ended up doing was renting a few different bikes (flat bar, road bike) for different weekends to try out so she could figure out at least what sort of geometry she wanted. She's pretty short (5'1") and the available bikes in her size in any of the LBS near us were all tri bikes. Rentals there were a lot more options and she found a road bike she liked and was comfortable riding so now I'm trying to put together a frameset with similar geometry using some of my garage parts.
