take scissors and make a cut that's what I did to mine and it came off easily

I used a pair of side-cutters on my 1995 Marin Muirwoods. The 26yo dork disk literally crumbled apart after a few snips....

looks good! How’s the weight? I want to do a build like this on a small budget. Did it come with drop bars?

So I picked up this goofy thing the other day for a song (almost literally!) and I’m not sure what to do with it:

2013 or 2014 Trek Allant

It has, quite possibly, the ugliest stem in the history of bikes.

But if you can look past the poo brown paint (Trek calls it espresso) and the cheap components the frame does have some potential. 17.5” chainstays, dual eyelets on the rear, mid fork braze-ons, shortish top tube, high-ish head tube, clearance for fat tires, double wall 36 hole rims, and matching steel fenders. Hmmm… maybe I CAN make a silk purse out of a sows ear?

I’m thinking this is just a drop bar away from a decent budget touring bike? Maybe a cheap gravel bike?

Are there any 9 speed brifters out there that are compatible with linear pull (V brake) brakes?

Mini Vs work well with modern STI. These are Sora R3K with 38mm tires.

So I had some 9 speed STI’s on a drop bar hanging around the garage and some Mavic CXP-21 wheels taking up space. Add a quill stem adapter and a thread less stem and it doesn’t look too bad:

Because the rear hub was a 130 Sora and the frame is 135 spacing, I decided the best course of action was to lace in a Deore LX mountain hub (135 spacing) I had hanging around. A quick check with an online spoke calculator verified the spokes would be the same length, so I went for it:

This pig might turn out alright. Now let’s see if I can find some mini V’s hanging around here somewhere….

Since we seem to be on a theme of hybrids converted to drop bars, here's mine.

Here is my 2021 Verve 2 Disk as she currently sits:

Upgrades so far are just cosmetic. Bontrager BackRack Disk MIK Rack, Bontrager Utility Trunk Bag, Bontrager Elite Water Bottle Cage, DuoTrap S speed/Cadence Sensor with Bontrager Trip 300.

I plan on getting the Bontrager Commuter Double Paniers and the MIK Panier quick attachment system. To make my longer trips more enjoyable I want to add bar ends and aero bars, PNW Coast Suspension Dropper Seat Post, and upgrade the pedals to some kind of SPD setup.

This is it in its as of now final(ish) configuration.

Made some changes to the drivetrain and the controls. Decided I still don’t like drop bars so won’t back to the northroads style. Very comfy now and the shifting is dialed in to perfection!

Not bad for a $20 bike! Of course I’m into it much more than that… but not more than $120!

Some great bikes here. This is my 2021 Whyte Stirling: alloy frame, carbon forks and Deore 1x11. Mods are bottle cages, narrower, more road oriented tyres, bar ends, SPD pedals and a Brooks Cambium C17 saddle,

My newly scavenged 2006ish Specialized Globe Sport aluminum hybrid bike. I found it in a dumpster near a construction site where other abandoned bikes have been marked for disposal. I also couldn't find the serial number or make (white Specialized Globe) in bike registries. So far it checks out...should be nice for navigating the C&O Canal to Cumberland one day.

Left side of bike in light

Photo by picnic table, unfortunately too shady

Bike as I found it in the dumpster. The tires were completely flat.

This is my introduction to the world of hybrids - a 1999 Cannondale SP500 (Silk Path), acquired for $25. It cleaned up surprisingly well, but at 22-inches it's just enough too big for me that I will be moving it along soon -
