Saw this next to one of the bins when I went to dump my recyclables today.
Yeah, like it says, it's a classic.

Anyone ever ride one of these? Did the automatic transmission actually work?

We've had several donated to the charity shop where I volunteer. They do work, but you don't get to choose when it shifts gears. If you like it, fine. If not, pass. I feel it to be needless complexity even if it works for you.

Made infamous by the LandRider television commercial brand. I sold one that my brother had purchased but never ridden. It was heavy and had low end components. The worst part was that it decided when to shift based on the angular momentum of the radially-separating weights that drove the derailleur. Ugh. I'm guessing that they sold hundreds of thousands of them, though.

Pretty complicated for what it is.
I think Sachs came up with the Automatic two and three speed long ago and they also changed gears on rpm. Changing the Rpm at which it changes gears requires disassembly and knowhow though.
Taking away the riders ability to choose which gear and when, is not such a good idea.
Those Sachs hubs are giveaways today.

If you let it go to the scrap yard, then eventually it will get to a place where it can be melted down and made into new steel products.
It won't take as much energy to make something new out of that than it will to mine and process ore.

No drive side photo? What, you afraid of a little TDAP shot?
I'd like to try riding one just once. Seems like the problem would be you would have to control your speed to stay in each gear. If you have something like an Automatix hub it's definitely in one gear or the other and not grinding.

Flat pedals, no disc brakes, flat bars, not Trek, rider’s choice of saddle…. This unit is the BF gold standard. Is the OP willing to ship?

About ten years ago I rode one around the parking lot at Goodwill where I found it. It worked fine, but I could tell I wasn't going to shift when I needed it to. Also, the gear spread was not wide enough for hilly Colorado Springs. Now I wish I would have bought it to tinker with.
