Durability of GP5000 VS GP4000 road tires

Durability of GP5000 VS GP4000 road tires

GP5000 rear tire with about 2700 miles on it shown below that will be replaced. I weigh 200 lbs so sure that reduces durability. However I’ve had several GP4000s that seemed to last longer and dry rot on sidewalls (not tread wear) was typically reason for replacement. I saw article that says road tire life is 2-4K miles so guess it’s about time. Anybody have similar experience with GP5000s? Notice any significant delta between it and GP4000? Love both tires but might switch to Gatorskins since I’m more concerned with life than rolling resistance at this point.

Gosh, you must ride on coarse sandpaper with that wheel scrubbing just a little. I've got over 3000 miles on one set and they are still looking good. I think the other bike has 5000 on the rear GP5K that is on it. But I don't know exactly when it was installed.

I'm only 170 - 185 lbs during the last 18 months. And I'll be surprised if that does turn out to be the difference in the wear results. I have to stick with the surface you ride on. Maybe some environmental factor. Do you use some odd ball cleaning products or tire dressing on them?

Looks like there is considerable cracking, that’s usually caused by UV or ozone. Or heat.

I have about 2500 miles on a set of 32mm GP5K tubeless and they still look pretty decent. Here's a shot I took last weekend when I discovered a shard of glass stuck in the tread (which didn't cause a flat, by the way):




I also have a set of 28mm GP5K tubed on a different bike. I haven't noticed any difference between these and GP4000's in terms of wear.

OK 2,700 miles.. but over what time period?

I've never seen a 5000 rot or wear like that. In fact, I've never worn one out.
I have been riding 5000's for the last 7,000+ miles, it's always road damage that stops me using them.

I guess some of them I could have continued to use, but I do the math.

Tire = $70
CoPay = $50

The extra $20 is worth the piece of mind while barreling along!

You've worn the tire down to the threads underneath the rubber, so 2700 miles is your tire life (to as accurate as your measurements are).

That's consistent with the one I've worn out on the rear, but that's still N=1. Ask me again in a year or so!

There's something unusual about this picture, viz., the narrowness of the wear band. It doesn't even go into the tops of the tread patterns and I don't see much squaring off of the profile. Did you run this thing with very high pressure?

I get more miles out of GP5000 than GP4000 but to compare apples to apples, you also have to realize the GP5000 is narrower. A 28 mm GP5000 is the same size as a 25mm GP 4000

I am getting around 5,000 front and rear (50/50 weight balance)

Agree, very strange. Maybe a trainer that uses the tire for resistance. Mine square off long before the cord shows.

I'd get 3500 to 4000mi out of a GP4000. I haven't monitored my 5000's closely but they do wear quicker. 3000mi is close.

I'm 170 and ride on relatively smooth roads, mostly flat. Bike stored in garage. 25c rear tire 100psi.

I've consistently noticed over the past 20yrs when it is hot out tires wear much faster and most of my riding is on hot asphalt. That cracking in the pic is there after first month of use.

Appreciate the responses. No trainer use or odd cleaning products. Run about 110psi. Bought on Amazon in March 2020 from Alta Outfitters ($99 for two, maybe priced too good to be true but boxes, everything looks legit). Not sure how long they sat on the shelf - don’t see a manufactured date? Started reading the reviews and couple of folks speculating they are fake, factory defects/QC issues. Also saw a question regarding the seam in the middle of the new tire, anybody know if that’s normal?

So much for the trainer theory. Mine have all had that seam. I run my 25s at 85/80 on 17mm internal dia. rims, but I’m a flyweight. I just discarded my first one at about 10,000 mi because of flats, with the wear dimples still slightly visible.

My NIB have the seam/line. One ride and it's gone. Also, Chain Reaction has them two for $89.00 so what OP paid wouldn't raise flags.

In March of 2020 that tire only cost me $35 each. I just bought a GP5000 last week for a spare and only paid $45 for it. I don't do Amazon for bike stuff. I do compare prices with them, but they never have the best deal for bike stuff when I search. And I never know if the sellers listing on Amazon will still be there the next day.

On the seam down the middle, flash is normal. I've always assumed its where the forms fit together when they are vulcanizing it or something.

Is it just the photo, it appears to bend inward at the middle also. My spares don't crease in the middle and the the actual tread stays rounded in the correct direction.
