Loaded it in the car after removing the front wheel. After work I pumped the tires up and went for a ride. I had to re adjust the seat as it shifted a bit while riding: )

Cleaned the bike from last night's dirt ride, and tapped a crank arm on another bike so the NDS pedal would thread in smoothly.

Cut and installed a wooden block to prevent my rear camera from tilting to the left.

Swapped the North Road style bars with a long stem back onto the SS MTB instead of the Scott AT-3 trekking bars with integrated bar ends and a short stem.

The trade off is gaining a more comfortable cruising and braking position back on the grips about even with the steering axis in exchange for losing the close climbing grip like the tops of a drop bar.

Put a new crank on my early 90s volpe. I’ve been trying to make it more off road friendly, and so far have switched out the rear derailer, cranks, bottom bracket, and shifters. Went from 7 speed lower end suntour to xt derailer and 9 speed ultegra shifters. Rear wheel tiagra I think? I have 35mm cross tires on there now, but I think I can fit up to 40.

One yellow bar tape deserves another. Did not do this today, but some other day, or other, or week. Cow approved.

Buncha stuff tonight:
Started converting the MTB back to trail use, from the commuter duty it's been pulling the last few years. Took off the rack and mud guards, and the light kit, and swapped out the saddle for something with a little more clearance (because hardtails) Stuck in some fresh brake pads while i was at it.

Put the racks and commuter saddle on the 'townie' bike. Had to fab up a center mount for the rack since it doesn't have them on the seatstays. Made 3 different mounting brackets for the rear blinky light, since i broke the first two attempts.

Also went out a picked up a 24" bike off Marketplace for the 10-year-old. Gave it a shakedown ride, tuned the brakes, and gave it some much needed cable management.

Lost and found the 5mm allen key more times than I can count

Sorry, I didn't get around to posting yesterday. I cleaned and lubed the chain. Briefly soaked in not so clean mineral spirits, then in cleaner mineral spirits, then a dunk in the homebrew lube. Let it hang and drip awhile, wiped and installed. Yay for quick links. I'll wipe it again today before I ride. Also I'll pump the tires.

You reminded me of when I used to commute 15 miles one-way to work mostly on the pot-hole ridden broken up streets of Seattle over to Kirkland (over the top of Lake Washington). After too many flats and being beaten to death on my road bike, I converted my front shocked/hard tale MTB into a full commuter bike with fenders, lights, City Slicker tires and rear rack. It made the ride more comfortable and flat free. The only downside was pushing the extra weight over one big hill, but the mtb had lower gearing than the road bike so it all evened out. Thanks for bringing back the memory.

Thank you for you vote of support. I always appreciate positive and thoughtful comments. This thread is in it’s infancy and people here may not have the hang of posting their upgrades, changes, builds with pictures which makes it more interesting, but I have faith. If it doesn’t work that’s fine, but I sure don’t go out of my way to try to torpedo other people’s threads.

A few upgrades. Repaired Brooks Pro (frame was replaced by Firth and Wilson Transport Cycles), replaced plastic ferrules on shift cable with metal ones, and replaced shift indicator o-rings. Oh, and replaced the disc brake calipers.

New calipers front and rear.

I’m not usually a fan of shift indicators but when the rear of the bike is about 3 miles away, they come in handy. The old indicator was a rubber piece that broke when I put the cable through it. Replaced them with 1mm (i.d.) x 3mm (o.d.) o-rings I got off Etsy. They use them for jewelry.

End product

I’ve been making changes to the tandem after I bought it in August. Before picture

I got the front wheel for my Orbea Avant back from the shop today, they replaced a broken spoke and trued the wheel. At home, I also switched out some components for items that arrived over the past couple of days. First I replaced the Tiagra 4650 crank set for a Kuota CF compact crank set. I had a 48T big ring on the Tiagra, I switched that to the Kuota in place of the 50T. The Kuota is a very nice crank set. I am quite pleased with it, $170 down from $200 on Ebay. MSRP was over $400. I also switched stems from 110mm, 6 deg., to a 100mm, 17 deg., and moved a 10mm spacer from above the stem to below. At the same time I installed a new compact 3T Ergonova, traditional round handlebar, replacing a bar that was kind of oval with a flat top.

When done with those changes, I took the bike for a short ride before taping the new bars. I had to turn the bar down a few mm's and raise the STI levers a bit higher to get the hoods level. The 10mm shorter stem and the traditional round bar makes the fit much more comfortable and natural feeling. My hands and wrists are in a pretty much neutral position now. Once I got those positioned properly, I put new tape on the handlebar, dialed in the shifting and braking, and double checked that everything was properly mounted and secure. Then I got in a 51 mile ride.

I have done a lot of work on this bike, and it has paid off. The work today was the finishing of that process, and the bike is operating tip top, and doing it quietly. I now have an Orbea Avant that is the quality ride I always thought it should be. I have really grown very fond of it, a fine ride. IMO, it also looks damn nice.
