As already mentioned by several people in this thread, those of us who were riding racing bikes in the 1960s or 1970s or 1980s associate blackwall tires with cheap department-store-level bikes. None of the racing bikes sold in bike stores in the classic era had blackwall tires; only the cheapest of the cheap bikes did. Surprising that a Vintage_Cyclist wouldn't know that.

This is the 21st century and that association isn't accurate with the current product offerings.

But thanks for assuming, in your total ignorance of me, what I do or do not know by attacking me with a trolling reply. Kudos buddy; you're the best!

I like the tan walls also. I just don't obsess about getting things exact -- especially with consumable parts -- to conform to some prior time in history. By the way, these are Panaracer Paselas, the same as the black wall Paselas on the Specialized Sequoia pictured above.

It didn't work! I think the adjuster is on the wrong side of the caliper.

I used to think black wall tires looked kind of meh. Then I started riding Continental 4000s and now 5000s. I got used to the color PDQ.

Of course I'll me the first to admit I spend more time with my hands up top and on the hoods than in the drops. Courtesy of lower back damage from my Army days.

Well I can say the the "color" of my sidewalls vary rarely matters to me. All bikes are made to be ridden and tires are consumable. I pick tires for capability not looks except in a few examples where I really am wanting a certain look.


Pink for an obvious reason.

Loved the darker brown look on this.

Then went to a lighter sidewall when I added the silver tubular wheels.

Seemed like the right thing to do for the Stella also since this was being done just to donate to the local collective to raise money with.

This too was about looks so it got tan sidewalls.

The other 40-50 some bikes have primarily been black and I'm just fine with that.

I'm on board with tanwalled vintage, blackwalled modern. Not a fan of the recent emergence of modern tanwall race bikes.

I recently built up a Soma Fog Cutter and opted for blackwalls because it's not vintage, even if vintage inspired. Then I built a 650b wheelset and found tire options leaned toward tanwall. The tanwalls just don't seem right.

I saw that American Classic has released a variety of tires in both skinwall and blackwall at around $33-$35 per tire (with lots of fatter options):

The tires this rig came with --- Cotton casing - really resemble an open tubular, and ride quite nice. Specialized house brand tires. Pretty nice for OEM

Thanks for posting this, Neal. Definitely worth trying out. I found the 28mm road tires for $30 each shipped(five tires for the cost of two RH standard case in the same size after shipping and tax).
