I go with either some "golfie" shorts, because the seams are usually sewn in a way that makes chafing a non-issue. For some reason, a lot of golfie shorts have zippered pockets, which I find is a bonus when riding a bicycle (things tend to fall out of my pockets). Or if I'm going urban camo mode, and want to blend into "MUP serviced" neighborhoods where broken beer bottles, abandoned mattresses, and shattered dreams litter the corridor of the bike path, a pair of super worn cutoffs that a decade ago were serving duty as office pants, preferably with paint stains or the remains of attempted vehicle servicing exploits are visible. These too, because they've been beaten by life to the softness of a cloth baby diaper (for those old enough to remember such Antique Roadshow items) are mostly chafing free. But, yeah, your path in may vary.

I have worn cycling expedition shorts for a long time, either with the cycling shorts sewn inside cargo/walk shorts, or with the two separable and snapping together (my favorite and current configuration). With the latter I can mix and match with any regular cycling shorts. These are my go-to for running errands or commuting by bicycle, with zip-up pockets for wallet and keys.

Mine are similar to these, but with a snap instead of a drawstring:

Elephant Bells!

Or... How about a Merkin?

BITD, mid 70's, REAL MEN wore panty hose under tights or sweats during the winter!

Getting back to reality, I have one pair of padded skivvies that I bought years ago, sort of like tighty whities. I've only worn them a few times. I think that the brand was Andiamo? The elastic leg bands can become uncomfortable on a long ride.

Used to go commando like many riders back in the days of wool shorts with a real chamois leather crotch. Required washing after every ride.

I've been using Kucharik Lycra padded shorts for years. Initially over tighty whities (cotton briefs) but switched to cotton "boxer briefs" because they have no leg bands and minimal seams.

I think the most important issue is the kind of seams in your seat contact area. For a short 5 mile ride it doesn't matter much but about 10 miles out when you have to adjust everything because of seams digging in it becomes an issue. Unless you are baseball player, male adjustments in public are considered offensive by some folks.

Oh yes, I was a student: 2018 to 2020 at Cascadia in Bothell. Hair dyed in every color of the rainbow, just for starters...
