As more cassettes were added, it necessitated narrowing the spacing, and therefore the chain. I think up until 8 speed, they are pretty compatibile.

KMC offers awesome chains for cheaper prices. https://www.kmcchain.us/7-Speed-Under-Chains_c_84.html is 7 speed.

I am pretty sure you can use an 8 speed chain. https://www.kmcchain.us/8-Speed-Chains_c_28.html

The chain you got is narrower and designed for 9, maybe 10 speed cassettes/drive train.

Welcome to the forums. You have purchased a 9 speed chain but it should work properly with your 7 speed sprockets. There was very little different in the thickness of the spocket itself itself between 7 and 9 speeds, with 9 speed sprockets being only 0.07mm thinner. The one caveat in all this is the amount of wear on the sprockets. If some of the sprockets are highly worn, the new chain may not mesh properly with them.

Try the 9-speed chain as T-Mar suggests. Many of us have found that 9-speed KMC and SRAM chains (as jdawginsc pointed you towards) work very well with vintage gear, even the narrow spaced 6 speed freewheels.

Do you know whether it is running a freewheel or a cassette? 7 speed Shimano 105 came in both versions, IIRC.

I have a new chain (Shimano) for that, part of an NOS 1055 take-off.
I think I have a new KMC 7/8 speed in a box here, too.
I second those who think a 9-sp will work, and only would add to keep the lettering facing outward.
I'm not sure that makes a difference, but it does when you get up in the 9/10/11 range on Shimano stuff w/Shimano chains.

An HG53 will probably be fine in practice. It's a 9spd chain, which is only marginally narrower than a 7/8spd.

I always use Shimano CN HG 71 with my 7 speed 1055, it's a better quality than CN HG 40. I think that 9 speed chain might get wedged in between chainrings being narrower, better get correct one.
