Please let me know your thoughts on value of 1971 Masi barn find, in need of proper restoration.

I found it at an estate sale and have savored cleaning it up. I've carefully disassembled the bike, with care to not destroy any original details. That said, I need to find a permanent loving home for this bike.
It is far too large (62cm c-t, plus 172.5mm crank is more than my inseam) and I don't have the room for a museum piece. It is begging to be restored for 2023 L'Eroica.

1972 Italian Masi with almost complete Nuovo Record Group
Campy NR component set all complete except for wheelset (replaced by Japanese clincher wheelset... ugh)
Paint and cosmetic condition B+. Plenty of chipped paint and surface rust but frame tubes all look good. All the original details are there.
Frame is straight with no crash damage. All original graphics are intact, but chrome is not.
I just disassembled, lightly polished and waxed to prevent any future deterioration.

Plenty of original details: Yellow paint dabbed on bolts and nut heads. Ultra rare "cable tie". Frame is all original with no paintwork and no frame mods. It is as original "Survivor" condition as you'll find.
Prices on the 'Bay are all over the map. I guess it depends on you finding the right person. Thoughts?

Is that BB shell as rusty as it appears? Endless threads on rust, but it is a fair amount of work. Sold as is will take a discount. Despite the rust, it will bring $$$$.

ebay, you will need to pack and ship at a reasonable price, pay the fees, etc.

Parts have good value, where are the brake levers? Brake pads?

Use ebay history as a guide on value. Ignore asking prices, focus on actual SOLD. SOLD prices are pretty consistent, once you factor in shipping and condition. Yours has condition issues, not deal breaking, but it lowers value.

I have found plenty of survivors without rust issues. Its all about how the bike was stored and handled.

I think bike needs paint, chrome, transfers, detail paint. Sure, one could just paint linseed oil on it and ride it...
restore could easily run to $1,250.
paint, 600, transfers 200 as these are uncommon, chrome, 200-400, detail paint, 120.
assuming no Herculean measures on the BB rust required.

• Brake pad holders are accounted for, just removed for cleanup.
• brake levers are there, just folded back for the picture. Grips were replacement Weinmann and were utterly deteriorated. Tossed em.
• Clinchers and dork disk we’re on the bike “as found”. I agree, the guy probably got sick of tubulars

Bottom bracket condition posted below. Remember, I didn’t keep it this way, so go easy on me. It looks ugly but the shell is solid. Tube joints seem in great shape, which is what counts. The shell is coated with wd40 to protect from further deterioration.

No one has a price opinion yet? It's a really great brand and age is of higher demand than many of newer models. May be able to ride 32mm tires.

$450 USD I think is a good price between a sell and a buy.

The BB shell would require grinding to smooth it out, or have the pits filled after rust removal. Labor of love kinda project.

fit new ones.
when I took an early bike there for a color change that is what was done, no extra charge.
reported 2 hours of work spent cleaning up the original, rushed effort.
the bikes were late, get them out the door.

If you want to sell the Masi with a minimum of fuss and expense, pick a price that will please you and list it in the Classic and Vintage for sale forum.

You will get your money without seller’s fees and the bike will go to a grateful new custodian.

If you want to maximize the financial return, list the frame and fork with detailed photographs of all flaws on eBay - $700 or best offer.

Then offer the components as separate lots in separate auctions.

The amount of your return is proportionate to your time investment and the quality of your photographs and descriptions.

Be mindful that seller’s fees on eBay are not trivial.

Are you motivated more by financial gain or do you feel inclined to pass it along to someone who will be grateful for the opportunity to own a vintage imperfect Masi?

How you feel about the bike and its disposition will inform your decision.

This one is a hard one for me to offer a price on. Tall is one issue and condition is another. I see a paint repair at close to $200 and then finding a person who wants it. I see it as about a five hundred dollar F&F that needs repair to the finish which would be about a &700 total value to a buyer. Repairs to the chrome would be close to $500 for the whole project so it would be way over the top to restore to a nice F&F. JMHO, Smiles, MH
