@globecanvas sorry to hear about that.
I had a back issue for years that only caused pain in my leg (sciatica) so it went undiagnosed for years. For me, there are about 4 stretches I have to do now to keep it aligned. Just yesterday, I threw it out overstretching and had to see a chiro.
One of the big things I've been told that will help fix it is weight lifting. Getting a stonger core, and a more balanced body. My hip flexors and glutes are out of whack since my quads are so swole Unfortunately, I'm going to have to start hitting the gym to balance it out. When I was in the Marine Corps I just got so burnt out on the gym. I hate going but it looks like I'll have to so I can cycle.
Also, try one of these:
I roll it on my spine and it does a pretty good popping it.

thanks guys -- VL at least it's not broken . FF, I started seeing a sports PT a few months ago, who diagnosed scoliosis and herniated discs. He prescribed core strength, that roller, and a standing desk, all of which I've been doing religiously, and it's all helped a lot. But I'm learning there are no miracle cures, I'm always going to have a fragile back.

Around 1982 I was knocked off of my motorcycle and bounced on my lower back @45mph. It prutrudes visibly but doesn't bother me too much most of the time. If I don't do any climbing for a while then climb, it comes alive. The last 3 weeks I've been sick again so very little saddle time until Saturday, when I did some steep climbing. FML, it was like someone was sticking a knife in my spine until I got home and got on the floor for a half hour.
Oh yeah, in 2007 I fell off a 40 foot cliff while mtb'ing and did compression fractures to 2 vertebrae around shoulder blade level. Those babies keep me awake sometimes until I can find a way to lie without pissing them off, or one of my shoulders.

BTDT with back pain. Coming to terms with life stresses that were contributing to the problem, acupuncture and massage solved my issues... Oh yea and time, lots of time and patience...
Good luck GC!

After a few months of relative back health, today was a disaster. Long car ride followed by a bad motel bed and then too much coffee -- then this morning I stretched a little bit in the wrong direction and blammo, I can practically feel the disc herniating itself between my shoulder blades, hurts to move or even breathe.
Aleve, a bunch of lying on a hard floor, and then some careful counterstretches and the pain got manageable. Then an hour ago, I did the same stretch without thinking and blammo again. Counterstretched right away, which helped immediately, but it still hurts and feels super delicate and edgy. I feel like my spine is a stack of Jenga blocks just waiting for a bunch of pieces to slide sideways and collapse.
I doubt this is portable to anyone else's back pain, but the counterstretch that seems to almost push the disc back towards where it is supposed to be, is simply to grab something at chest height (steering wheel works, if driving) and try to push the shoulders straight down towards the hips, making the spine convex forwards, like a letter C if looking from the left side. Lying on my back and rolling the spine over a roller accomplishes much the same thing but is far, far more painful.

Sorry globecanvas. Hope this helps (couldn't find a video):
Hibbert: [whistles] Your spine is more twisted than Sinbad's
take on marriage. [chuckles]
Homer: So? Just give me some drugs and surgery.
Hibbert: Oh, I'd love to but, uh, to be honest, modern
medicine has a lousy record of treating the back.
We spend too much time on the front.
Homer: Yeah, there's some neat stuff on the front.
Hibbert: I'm going to send you to my chiropractor.
Homer: Hey, I thought real doctors hated chiropractors.
Hibbert: Well, that is our official stance but between you,
me, and my golf clubs, they're miracle workers.

ick, sorry about the back issues, g.c.
robabbeatle - I found a rental in Sam Hughes, thanks for the tip on that neighborhood, I wouldn't have guessed that was a great location just looking at the map. I was originally thinking of staying right up near Mt Lemmon, but being in town makes more sense for group rides and in-town activities. I can't wait to get there - we have 4" of snow and it's 2 degrees right now.

This reminds me of my days at Ft. Carson, like the time when we were in the field and it warmed up to -20.

I never really thought about it...but I think im going to not take my cholesterol medication for a while and see if that helps with my leg. One of the side effects is muscle/joint pain and/or weakness. Ive been on the medication for ~3 months now and although this has been going on longer than 3 months, in that time my leg/hip hasn't gotten any better..if anything its worse. Its more of a daily thing now and I've been on the bike a whole 40 minutes in the last 2.5 weeks. I need to mention this my sports doctor and see what she says.

I have a bad feeling that my wife and daughter will be going through their respective life changes at the same time. I think I'm just going to install a urinal and shower in the garage and my son and I will just move in there.

Was coming down a big hill (hwy 9) this morning, and got passed by an angry bmw, eager to get up to the bumper of the car in front of me.
Then they proceeded to sit about a foot off the front car's bumper, what an idiot. I was just laughing behind them both since the front car kept slowing down on purpose to piss off the bmw.
Then a prius got in on the action and sat on the bmw's bumper, all while I'm just coasting behind them shaking my head.
Is there a contract you sign when purchasing a bmw that says you promise to be a dick at all times while in the car?? there must be.

Around here it's German luxury cars and big trucks that are usually the most aggressively confrontational IMO.

I would suggest that to get to areas north by bike, you head east to Mountain Ave. as it is the best north/south route until you get all the way over to Tangue Verde. You can also get east via Broadway, it is a main road but actually has a good bike lane. This can take you out to Old Spanish trail which is the route to ****** hill: a great ride in the country.
Let me know if I can be of further help.
Enjoy!
edit*: the censors are editing the name of the hill: it is Ppistol without the second p

I read that as "urinal in the shower" and was very confused. My wife was livid that I pee in the shower until I explained that I aim for the drain, so technically it's not really "in" the shower. kwim?

My neighbor just offered me a free entry in El tour de Tucson, a super Fred ride as some would say. I had no plans to ride this and am not ready at all as it is ~104 miles and on the 22nd. What the hell, it costs some $180 so I had to say yes. I can wheel suck.
Plus, we'll get to see Smartstop guys have to make it through the crowd to get to the front as, for whatever reason (charity?), they are starting last.

A group from my team go down for that every year. They say it's a good ride and always have fun.
