I've worked on thousands of headsets with this kind of lockring. Vise-Grips came in real handy.

I've got the same style headset on an early-80's Miyata (currently my commuting bike, see my sig) and was unable to get the lockring off with my small lockring tool. (Because my lockring tool doesn't have a long handle so I can't generate much leverage.) Incidentally, this sort of headset is the only instance where I've ever wanted a lockring tool that's smaller interface than for a bottom bracket lockring.
The headset feels smooth enough, so I'm leaving it for now. And I've got other JIS headsets in boxes in case this one gets eaten up and eventually needs replacing.

Great tips here. I found success by applying WD-40, using a square drive screwdriver held at a right angle to the nut, then tapping the side of the screwdriver blade with a rubber mallet.

The easiest way to loosen this is by setting a dull screwdriver blade into the notch and tapping it loose. The beauty of this system is that the lockring doesn't have to be set super tight, and it should come off pretty easily.

Had an identical headset on my Miyata Street Runner and used a ball peen and drift. A few careful raps in each cut out and it was finger loose.

It's just a threaded lockring, hit it with the old hammer and screwdriver approach and it should come loose easily enough. I doubt it's on there very tight.

No, the radius of curvature for a BB lockting tool is too large, and the hook will lift out of the slot.

Actually there is a much easier way because there is a tool that is made for exactly this application, but on another item.https://www.walmart.com/ip/13447599?a...5=pla&veh=sem; the threaded notched ring for the headset is 35mm; this spanner is designed to R&R a 35mm threaded and notched lockring. And you can buy it at Walmart for $10.00. Who knew?

Wow, sorry I missed all the entertainment on this thread! As with many things mechanical a little inspection and logic should make apparent both disassembly and adjjustment, but we all miss the "obvious" sometimes.

Eldi made a adjustable lock-ring tool , also Hozan . The serrated washer has the ability to lock the headset when lock-ring is tightened , A good rugged old school design .

I just used this tool on a $9.00 Free Spirit F12!It has just this setup! I have all kinds of drifts and punches, brass and other wise. Could not work on my old bikes of all values with out this tool! Well. I could! I'm glad that I have this tool!

It will work, but not as well. The wrench is for the stock (as in rear portion of a rifle) lock ring that has 4 notches, not 3 like the headset lock ring. Per your picture, the right hook of the spanner will fit in one notch but the ring will not fit up into the opening, so the left hook digs into the outside edge of the ring; it will tighten or loosen the 3 notch ring, but it won't be pretty.
