Tire "hairs" rubbing the frame, is it bad?
Those hair like things in new tires, is it bad to allow them to rub the frame. Cut or a sign the tire is too wide?

Tire might be a tad big for the frame, but I can't imagine the hairs are doing any harm. Snip 'em off if they bug you.

Except as an annoyance, they aren't doing any harm, if they are all that's rubbing. I've trimmed them off with a nail clipper when the ticking was distracting.

It's unlikely you'd experience paint damage from them, but it's possible you could dull the paint finish from the continual rubbing if left untrimmed. You would need to be pretty careful about keeping your wheels in true, though...if you're tires are that close to the stays.

For future reference, they are called "sprues." They might dull your paint as noted by another poster. Otherwise a non-issue and they will fall off soon.

Hint: hair or beard trimmers work great for removing them. As an added bonus there is some visceral enjoyment with giving your tires a haircut.

Hi. I know it is an old thread but I'm writing this for the future reference. Yesterday I bought used bike. Today while I was cleaning the bike I have noticed some thin, line like wear inside of non drive side of chain stay. First I tought it was epoxy or nail polisher applied to hide or fix small crack (my imagination). Then I realized the wear is at same place where the tire "hairs" rubbing. Then I started to search if it is possible, and I have found this thread. So yes, it could be bad for the frame. In my case the the paint varnish has worn out where the chain stay is concave, and the aluminum of the frame is visible where the chain stay is convex. I hope my english makes sense I wish to attach pictures but it has message count limitation.

It'll create a superficial wear spot. If it goes thru all of the surface protection layers [paint], for a metal frame, it can allow for corrosion to work its magic. Over a period of time in undesirable conditions, it may lead to a more serious issue.
by then, we'll all likely be heads affixed on E-BSO's.
