Cyclist killed on LIE Svc. road
Appears to have happened this morning, eastbound on the service road near Great Neck HS.
I and many here have ridden that road how many times ?, Solo as well as with groups.
Thoughts with the family.

Heard it on the radio and every time i hear a story like that I think it could of been me. I wonder if he had a tail light and other high visibility things.

that's bad, sorry for the family. that road doesn't look particularly bike friendly even if it was a Sunday morning, which I think, is usually a decent time to ride. meaning less traffic

Unfortunately that road is considered, by local standards, very bike friendly with (mostly) wide shoulders, limited intersections and driveways, and good sight lines. It's especially popular on weekend mornings when commercial traffic is very light.

hmmm, looks like 3 lanes of traffic, no shoulders, only a fog line. unless you mean the grassy patch w trees?

No, thats one of the spots without a decent shoulder. It varies but most of the time we've got more room. That's what makes it a relatively popular route. Still, no place is 100% safe.

Terrible, very sad.
I have ridden that road since the early 80's. It's rarely the road conditions and more often an inattentive driver, under the influence, tired etc. There's a tone of room for vehicles on the service road with or without a shoulder. Hope they locate the criminal driver
My condolences to the family

LIE Service Road was my riding route out to the Island during the 60's to early 80's. Moved to Florida (another story) in 85. I remembered the lane design being two lanes with the right lane being larger with accommodation for a cyclist. The pics looked like three lanes and not very spacey at all. Not sure if road design in that section is a concern for DOT to reconsider. Had fond memories riding on these roads. Very sorry to hear about this cyclist.

I suspect that that when they catch the driver they’ll possibly find a distracted driver incident.

Which just seems odd as they had a video of the Chrysler mini-van. Just seems like it went to the back burner.
