You're too kind!

I really like these wheels. Not the lightest at around 1800g for the pair but absolutely rock solid.

I don't think that this bike can get any more refined, about the only thing that I wish I could get around is that damn 21.1mm steer tube

I'm always looking for a fork to drop in as a replacement, but a quality fully chromed fork with tall steer tube and 380mm + axle to crown is really tough to find without spending a huge (to me) amount of money. But if anyone happens to have one...

Thread Hijack...Quill to Aheadset Stem Adapter Aesthetics

New quill stem adapter arrived today...$13.00+/- shipped from China.

Some pics of the results:

New $13 adapter - note the square shoulder detail.

New $13 adapter - additional view.

I'm usually not a fan of converting quill stems on vintage bikes but yours doesn't look bad.

Thanks, I think.
It's not an InniCycle, but the price of admission is a bit lower.

Looks way better

One question though, is that steel or aluminum?

If aluminum, I'd recommend periodically raising up and inspecting that transition from the large to the small diameter for cracks. It looks like the transition is radiused but there's still going to be some concentration of stress there - much more than if that transition was a lot less drastic like with your old adapter.

Thanks for the safety tip, abshipp.

I had thought of that...ie square-shouldered/non-radiused being a stress point.

I combed the net for a while seeking this config, and noted the majority had a radius at that junction.

I wondered from a metals viewpoint if it was a weaker choice of configuration.
The main tube is aluminum...bolt and wedge are steel

This one is on hiatus due to a bent rim.. The one on the bottom is waiting to get paint..

So I transfered a couple parts to this one to get it ergo'd! It was complete Mavic, but now Mavic/Campagnolo. Its Mavic 571 Campagnolo 8spd. NOS Mavic Mach2CD2 Tubulars, updated the brake calipers to the Campagnolo equivalent Mavic calipers during its time. Gotta keep riding!

Lets go!

The thing is, it will be comparably more prone to fatigue failure than an adapter with a larger radius transition, but there is still a radius there. If it was a sharp corner I wouldn't consider using it at all. The question is whether normal stresses from cycling would be enough to cause a problem.

Generally I'm of the opinion that bike parts are way stronger than people think they are. Of course things break occasionally, and the stem/fork interface has really terrible consequences if it fails so it warrants extra caution. It's probably fine, but definitely don't put off researching any strange new noises from the front end

Thanks. Its sometimes super frustrating to sort thru everything on ebay.
link to the adapter

This could be great for one of my kids' road bikes. Purely aesthetic since it works great as is, but for $12, why not?
Is the stem cap replacable? It looks like it can slid off. That would be a cherry on top if so.

What frame and fork is the unpainted one? It may be the angle or the lack of paint, but the downtube looks OS.

Thank you!

I like that the bike is both "modernized",
yet very basic.
Cheap & Good.

That aspect of the build (so far) is very satisfying.
I'm sure I'll continue to tweak it.
