15 miles Thursday night, around 50F, a bit cooler than Wednesday's 80F temp. Mostly rode around neighborhoods with Christmas light and music displays. Very pleasant.

21.1 miles (34k). It felt a lot colder today, 21° to start. The sun didn't come out to play until after 10AM. A little more wind tomorrow and Sunday. Middle of next week would be good for Penguins, it's supposed to be 7° at 9AM. Think I'll take the first few days of the new year off.

Good s. Texas overcast today - 50 and low humidity. SE wind just bumped into double digits. The greenway was almost deserted, making for a good pace on 32 mi.
Rode my Moser for the first time since I built up my International.
It has a new front bag for stuffing layers, and I did just that after I began sweating inside my wind shell, but kept my Falke Airport knee socks on.
Great ride.

Rain tomorrow, clear and 72 for New Years Day

We've managed to pedal 238.5 miles in the last 6 outings. It's been positively wintery here (northern Colorado Front Range) so we've had to wait for the temp to rise over 32, which has meant 30 mile rides at 11 or 12 MPH on our recumbent trikes, but yesterday it was 48F and we were able to get average 13.1 MPH for 50 miles.

Not our fastest speeds or longest ride, but given the conditions, I must say it was exhilarating.

I broke a fender crossing on a bridge, though, so today we hike.

Cold (25° to start) but sunny for 18.8 miles (30.3k). 35° two hours later at the finish. Windier tomorrow (8-18mph) but the rest of the week is snow and wind. I'll take a few days off.

One last ride to cap off a memorable year. 62 miles, wintery gray skies, temps in the mid 30s the whole time. I shouted "Happy New Year" to everybody I saw that was within hearing distance.

I finished building my latest Velo de Ville in time for one last ride in 2016. The venerable Peugeot U08 got the Takeout basket and Loading Dock rack from my dear, departed Scott; and the nice light set of black Rigida wheels from her sister Versailles.

We rode the 14 mile local loop, on streets that are mostly dry, with scattered ice patches and salty brine puddles to dodge. It was 21°F when I left the house, and I discovered that I need to work on my winter riding gear if I'm going to do much more of this. There was a patch of exposed skin right between my eyes that may have gotten frostbit - the balaclava doesn't cover it and neither do the sunglasses. I should have asked Santa-wife for goggles this Christmas. Sure is weird riding along with only one tiny spot going numb with the cold.

Anyway, I only managed to take one photo, and that was just two blocks from home at the end of the ride:

I'll shoot more tomorrow when I ride the Midtown Greenway in Minneapolis with one of my buds.

Ten miles this afternoon - flat ride in dry mid-40's temps but windy. Not bad for Dec. 31.

I've had a chest cold for the last two weeks or so in addition to which winter causes asthma to kick up a notch and in turn, that causes difficult breathing so very little riding. So today, being nearly back to normal, I rose 20 miles and once again I'm astonished how quickly conditioning is lost. My legs are actually tired. At least I'm riding.

Jim,
Best wishes for the best year possible for you and Sharon.

A good 2017 to all !

The weatherman was a little off today. Predicted cold and windy, partly cloudy. It was cold to start (20°) but quickly warmed up and not a cloud in the sky. However, near the end of the 21.6 (35k) sunny ride I encountered probably the worst headwind I've ever tried to ride in. Brutal! Wind predicted for tomorrow and snow/rain the rest of the week.

Happy New Years to all!

Didn't get a chance to post yesterday's ride. Met with the Coast 2 Coast riders and did an excellent New Year's Eve Tampa Lunch Ride through much of Tampa's older sections of town, to downtown Tampa for lunch and back to the starting point. Many of the neighborhood streets we were on were original, early 1900 brick streets. Very bumpy! Good thing I don't wear dentures or they would have fallen out from all the vibration. Several stops for some photo shoots of some very interesting sights of Tampa. Even had some people from Orlando come down to join us.

I wanted to start off the new year with a nice bike ride so, along with my riding buddy, we did a very nice and windy 52 mile ride. It doesn't look as if this wind is going away any time soon.

First New Years Day Tandem ride that we can remember - but, since it was a sunny 45F afternoon, rode 2 miles around the neighborhood, primarily to make sure that the newly-rebuilt (by Velocity) rear wheel is fine, which it seems to be. Then, as my stoker isn't crazy about coldish weather riding, I went off for a ten mile ride. (Not on the tandem.) I much prefer warm weather, too.

Got out today for the first time in years and was glad I got in my New Year's ride. Just tooled around the subdivision getting used to the bike again (1992 Trek Single Track 930, overhauled last spring). It actually went very well and I'm looking forward to getting on it at least every week this year. I turn 72 in April and I'm also still gigging on sax - currently playing with three groups. This bike was one I bought hardly used in about 2003 and it sat around waiting for me to do an overhaul on it which I never did - I just didn't have tools for the bottom bracket and freewheel. Finally I took it in for the overhaul and they did a great job. This thing is totally original except for the street tires and new brake pads. The reason I kept it after selling my other bikes is it simply fit me so much better than anything I bought new for myself. That counts for a lot more now than it ever did before and I'm really glad I found it.

I don't think it ever got above freezing here today, and we cancelled the Midtown Greenway ride. But I rode my Velo de Ville 18 miles on the Mississippi River Trail out of Kaposia Park. It was a beautiful New Year's Day:

I only met one other rider out there, and set up for this shot before she got to me:

Not much snow on the ground, but the river is icing up. Man, I bet that is some cold water out there...

Today definitely decided it for me - I will be riding a lot more this winter. Call it a resolution, or just a declaration, but winter riding on a day like today is no hardship at all. Now to find a good pair of goggles...

47 miles Sunday, the first ride of the new year. Most was pleasant, including a short group ride midway. Pleasantly cool. The final 12 miles home was a bit of a slog, cramping up.

Apps show I rode about 2,000 miles in 2016. That's about double what I'd expected. I didn't pay attention to the year's tally until December after finally paying for Cyclemeter to get access to all features. Pretty good bicycling year for me.

Finished off 2016 with a 50 miler that I normally do on Sundays that takes me to the Oahu north shore, but I wanted to see the Green Bay game today (turned out not to be as important due to what happened to other teams) so went out Sat afternoon instead. Was pretty cool out (didn't check but probably mid-60s by the time I rolled in @ 5:30) though winds were somewhat northerly, meaning I had mostly helping winds coming back up what we call "Pineapple Hill" (1000 ft elevation gain). Was a good end to the year. Meanwhile some Chinese carbon tubbies I had ordered a ways back showed up this week, but I hadn't planned ahead and it turns out no one on the island has Mastik 1 glue so I have to wait to get an order in from the mainland.

Had a really great New Year's day. There were only 3 of us in the crack-of-dawn downtown group (sometimes there's 50). We had a great ride, made up our own route, and stopped at the Pearl bakery for coffee and pastry (the only place open downtown).
Since I wasn't far away, called and went to my friend's house, shot 9-ball, had a breakfast brew, then I chased them on their tandem for a second ride.
And chased that with barbeque.
45 charging miles - it was a great day.

Did a short ride today - 12 miles - and was really shocked at how much of an effort it was. I'm 66 years old and my last ride was back in October of last year. I thought that semi-retirement would mean more time on the bike but somehow life got in the way. Children and their children took up time as did my part time job and last year seemed to be full of family illness and funerals. Not having a routine meant scheduling ride time was near impossible. Oh, and the weather was awful and seemed to coincide with my time to ride!

This year I plan to ride more frequently. Even short rides on a regular basis will keep my fitness levels up so that I can actually enjoy cycling! Today's ride was fine (as far as it went) in sub zero temperatures but along a traffic free cycle route near my home. 2017 - bring it on!

Yes, bring it on! Keep riding, it will get easier too (as I'm sure you know already).

Today after we'd been to the gym and run some errands my sweetie said I should take a bike out for a spin. Yowee!

It's been a while since I took the Motobecane out so that was today's choice. About 25 miles; don't know exactly because the bike doesn't have an odo and I didn't feel like running a phone app to track the course. I don't really care how far it was, even if it means I don't get braggin' rights.

Plan 1 was to investigate some areas I haven't ridden, specifically Linear Park running northeast from Alewife. I ended up in Davis Square, Somerville. The sharp-eyed among you will spot the tandem toodling along on the far side of the street.

Somerville has lots of "official" bike routes with "Bike Route" signs all over the place. I started up that way then realized it was a one-way street and I wasn't at all sure how easily I could follow a morass of "Bike Route" signs back to Davis Square. So I bailed at the first right turn and followed roads I knew back to a road I knew.

The rest of the day was to Lexington and back. A nice day!
