I think it's a keeper.

Keeper, yes!!!! This is my grocery shopper, my patriotic holiday parader, my beach cruiser, my trailblazer, my all-rounder. I even bought it from a San Diego firefighter.

Schwinn Project KOM-10 in Team Issue Red, White, and Blue, with RollerCam front brake instead of the cantilever seen on all other KOM-10s I have encountered. June 1988 production date, Greenville MS.

Only 2000 of these were made, 1988-1999, replacing the Paramountain. I am told it is very similar in geometry (71 degree head tube, 74 degree seat tube, 17" chainstays) to a Panasonic ATB frame.

Nice! That beautiful paint job nails it as a 1992. Vintage Trek's '92 catalog is missing that page, but the tech manual lists all the spces, if you're interested; document page 32.

Are you sure you want to get rid of that paint? It really is very extremely cool, IMO. If you really do, you might want to have a powercoater media blast it; that Imron is tough.

I haven't decided on the main color yet but am leaning toward spray.bike Peacock. I think Im going to try to paint it myself. Im trying to get my tandem out to a painter asap and I know it will have at least a year wait so I'd like to get this one done quicker.

I think it's a keeper.

Here is the detailed info, from the 1988 Schwinn ATB catalog. KOM-10 = complete bike in red, white, and blue. KOM-20 = identical frameset-only

Thanks, I'll look at that manual. I had found an online catalog with some info that let me get the dimensions.

The paint is damaged in places and flaking off on the seat tube, I think from where the FD was, and there is a dent in the top tube. I will probably build it and make sure that I like riding it then paint it. I will probably want a 1x with maybe an IGH. I don't know how wide of tires I can fit on it, my goal would be Rene Herse 2.3" wide tires with fenders. I'm not sure what rims to use either. My plan was Velocity Blunt rims but they are disc only.

I didn't realize there was a red white and blue one back then too. I had only seen the ones from the early 90s

I have no need for a lot of gears, there are no hills here, where I ride is a lot of stopping and starting. My single speeds have been sufficient but I want something a little different.

Fair enough. Just hang onto the FD; friction compatible is becoming harder to find.

I only bought a frame so I won’t be getting one with it.

My frame should be delivered today. I think the first step will be deciding on how to fill the dent in the top tube. To do it correctly it should probably be heated and the high spots hammered down and then the dent filled with solder/metal. I would have to send it off for this. I'm thinking of a quick bondo fill and painting it myself and maybe having it redone later. I guess it will depend on how much I like the bike.

It would be better to bondo, rather than heat. It sounds terrible, but it's true.

The tubing is special, and you would lose the heat-treat.

I should have put in that post that this is a trek I'm receiving and not the paramountain. I'm not sure if it is as special.

Thanks for the info. I think I will just use filler and do a DIY paint job. I want to get it up and running soon.

Both are heat treated tubing, so both need care to not ruin the material.

Have a question? RJ the Bike Guy delivers. If you don't have the frame blocks, I've seen them made of wood.
