105 goes Di2

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have never ridden a Di2 equipped bike, but one is definitely in my future. I can't wait to see how it integrates with my Garmin. I also look forward to installing a power meter on the new bike. I'm really fascinated by all this new technology.

It's quite unfortunate.
I hope Shimano comes out with a non-series 2x11sp mechanical drivetrain that has rim brakes and hydraulic brakes. Doubt it'll happen, but I can hope. The snob in me would rather ride non-series 2x11 than Tiagra 2x10.

Half a decade ago a 105 groupset cost under $400 shipped from across the pond. Ultegra was under $700 shipped.
This 105 di2 is $1890 retail. That is more than most 105 bikes cost just a couple years ago.
yes yes yes, I am aware that buying in bulk gives OEM better pricing compared to individual retail.

This is less than ideal for all those who like to keep frames running with newer tech. I geek on older steel frames with modern drivetrains, but between di2 and disc, thats quickly becoming difficult.

For those with 8 or 9 speed mech though, 10 will be pretty cheap. I think it's just new shifters, cassette and chain. 9/10 speed chainrings if you're not running those already. Maybe a new freehub body. I could be wrong.

I've always said that if they made 105 di2, I'd buy it, and I will (I'm 185lbs, so a few grams in the total system weight doesn't make a difference to me). Already have plans for a new gravel bike (swapping my GRX di2 to the new bike), and then a new road bike, which will be full aero, and 105 di2. Perfect timing.

For those saying there's no benefits to di2, I'll mention a few that make a big difference for me, no cables (I've broken several), shifting under load, shifting while braking. Those alone are enough to justify the cost for me, but different strokes for different folks, ride what works for you.

I've been running wireless shifting for almost two years. What sram calls sequential and compensating modes have never appealed to me. I just put a 2-sprocket limit on multi-shifts and use that after a chain ring shift. I could be pedaling out of the saddle in the big ring and get an unexpected shift to the little ring and a double sprocket shift. No thank you. I want total control of my chain ring shifts. I'll take my two lever shifting system over any four lever system. Much easier to
use with winter gloves.

I'm down for it. I'll most likely never own a set unless I buy used in about a decade, but I think it's cool as hell.
I would guess, and it's totally a guess, that Tiagra and lower will remain mechanical but will eventually move to 11 or 12 spd in the rear.
People that get 105 and up group sets tend to ride more and will see the benefit, while often time Tiagra and lower aren't ridden as often and battery charging becomes a detriment.

Unfortunately, this may effectively signal the end of advancement for mechanical drivetrains from Shimano.

Bike parts do not wear out for the most part and so Shimano needs a new gimmick to increase sales (normally). My first electronic addition to a bike was a Cateye computer that provided speed and cadence information and the battery lasted more than a year before needing to be replaced. Now I have a Wahoo that needs weekly recharging and a smartphone that needs daily recharging and a road e-bike that needs to be recharged and a Varia radar that also needs to be repowered. The last thing I want to do is add yet another device that I need to monitor its charge state and deal with before I ride.

If the other devices need to be charged it is not going to preclude my going from a ride and I have a standard road bike if the e-bike charge is too low. That would not be true for Di2 components.

Haven't checked other new bikes with it yet, but the new Madone with 105 Di2 is EIGHT GRAND. For 105. $8,000.

I always thought that the reduced complexity of the electronic gizmo should mean it's cheaper to make than the clockwork inside a normal shifter.

Tiagra here I come.

$8K for a bike with a mid tier groupset that people will want to uprgrade the wheelset. Is that correct?

Edit: Is that a proprietary seatpost/seattube also?

The frameset is probably going to be $5k+. I don't think that you can compare this to the $2k entry-level carbon bikes with 105 and placekeeper wheels circa 2010.

No, that's not correct. It comes with 51mm deep, 23mm internal width carbon rims with DT Swiss hubs. They go for about $1500 separately.

The new Madone is SLR line only. There will likely be a Madone SL with 105 Di2 that will be far less than $8k.

Seems like Di2 has some shifter buttons you can install to shift away from the brifters. Will the system work using those without the brifters installed?

Sounds awesome! Let's allow doping too. Let's see how fast humans can really go on a bike. Maybe we can call it "racing." 👍

No need to dope. But the viewers will line up. Imaging a crash with everybody going 40-50 mph. That is the sort of carnage that Hollywood loves. Maybe give them all guns and breasts. Call it American style.

Looks like it. Proprietary seat posts are "in" these days.

I'm not in the new bike market. We both know we could have 15 bikes for that much, all with DA, all used.

It is how the mountain bike one works, so (without double-checking) I suspect so.

No need to crash. Let's just have a race where the goal is to see how fast a person can go on a bike.
