1992 22” Schwinn Crisscross

I am a fan of Schwinn Cross bikes. I have three of them! 1993 20” Crosscut all original, 1993 20” Crossfit all original; and my new addition a mint 1992 CrissCross which I overpaid for but could not pass up because it was 22” and so clean. Even so, I decided to have fun and rebuild it! I removed all of the original Suntour stuff (kept it all just in case). Installed Shimano square type bottom bracket - BSA 68MM, Spindle: 122.5MM (UN300), Shimano Acera M361 hybrid crankset (black, 175mm X 42/32/22T), Shimano 7 speed freewheel 13-28T, new riser alloy stem (Nasbar), and new alloy 660mm flat bar (generic brand), new Conti tubes and new Bontrager LT3 700x38 tires. Next steps include installing Shimano Acera SL-M310 rapid fire shift levers, Shimano STX FD-MC32 front derailleur 28.6mm new old Stock (NOS), Shimano STX rear derailleur RD-MC34 new old stock (NOS), new Shimano CN-HG40 hyperglide chain, all new cables, housings, new alloy pedals etc. Keeping the dia-compe canti brakes and levers for now. Obviously I’m doing this for the fun of it… and the fact that I could not find a 22” Crosscut or Crosspoint anywhere so I decided to build something better on basically the same frame. Since I am a newbie on this bike forum, I have to post 10 times before I can upload pictures. I’ll upload the pics as soon as I can.

We've got 2 94 Crosscuts, one 16in, and one 22in.
The 16 I converted last year into a drop bar gravel rig for my wife.

How do you like the butterfly bars?

My Schwinn High Sierra is currently living with a set- these are an inexpensive set of UNO models. The idea is fantastic to me- I've got nerve problems in my left hand- so the more I can change positions and the more different those positions are, the happier I am- however they really haven't made me happy. And I know there's several different designs of the the butterfly...

Now- my FIL has what I recall to be a 92 CrissCross- it's purple. It's been hanging in the garage for decades- he offered it to me a while ago- but I've got enough projects going on. I'd want to do the same thing- replace most of all the lower end Suntour gear and make it all XC-Pro or something stupid like that.

The butterfly bars do allow for a few more positions, but I've been happy with drop bars with aero and interrupter levers too.
The 94 Crosscuts did come with some unique Tektro brake levers that made braking a little easier. I really never liked the grip shifts though. Ours have not failed, they just don't make me happy. The long foam covers for the butterfly bars have become difficult to find. The last ones I bought haven't held up well, and started to crack after only a short time.

Thank you! I was also going to ask what you were doing for a mirror there.

Those guidonnet levers are pretty nifty.

Crosscut

Here’s one of my other Schwinn Cross bikes. It’s a 20” Crosscut that I will be selling locally if anyone in the South Florida area is interested.

1991 Crisscross

Looks great! I’m looking to do some of these upgrades on my 1991 Crisscross. What model is the new sprocket, hub and rear wheel?

The rear wheel is original except for the new Shimano Tourney/TY MF-TZ500 7-Speed Multiple Freewheel, 14-28 Tooth. Replaced all of the Suntour stuff with new Shimano parts.
