MTBs moved in to fill the gaping chasm that pavement racing bikes never filled very well for the average rider.

And back in the 80s and 90s, hard tail and rigid MTBs with slicks made good all-purpose bikes.
They still do, imo -- especially old-school NORBA geometry hardtails.

I agree old-school HTs make pretty good street bikes and commuters. I have one for that very purpose.

New-school “progressive” geo.... not so much,. I mean, they work, but not the most fun to ride on the street, IMO.

As so many have stated, road bikes and their tiny high pressure tires are not very practical for the average cyclist. Mountain bikes are tougher and just more useable since they can go anywhere. Yes they are in a way the pickup truck of cycling.
