2020 Buy/Sell/Trade Stats

what are your 2020 buy/sell/trade stats? Went back and tabulated the YTD numbers as just started this year.

since the year began - bought 25 bikes total, sold 11, have 5 currently for sale and 9 in the stable. 2 of the 9 were stripped completely and kept as frames for a rainy day or potential sale on Ebay. Broke even on the "sold" bikes (maybe swapped out some parts, kept a better wheelset, seat, other part than I had before, etc), Doubled my money on the Keeper bikes (based on what I think I could sell them for) and stand to make a little bit on the for sale bikes.

Keepers for now include: 1987 Trek 520 Cirrus, 1987 Schwinn Voyageur, 1980 Schwinn Voyageur All Chrome, 1980 Schwinn Voyageur all chrome, 1978 Schwinn LeTour III,Trek Mountain Bike, and 3 newer bikes for my family. Have ridden the above bikes for a combined 894 miles this year.

longest drive was 8 hours round trip for the first 1980 Chrome Schwinn. Second longest was 3 hours for the Trek. All worth it to me in a year where looking for a new hobby. Have not kept track of new part/tool purchases on Ebay, Amazon, etc. That prob eats up most of the "gain" but i have a lot of parts on hand now too in my shop

Still hunting but trying to be a little more discerning in my purchases. Generally won't buy on Ebay anymore - shipping eats up any value in the bike. Maybe the perfect bike, but the definition of same keeps increasing

what are your stats?

Flipped...

'91 Trek 400T (frankenbike) ... $320
'87 Schwinn Circuit (repaint) ... $340
'87 Trek 560EX frameset ... $100

'78 Windsor Super Carerra (top tube ding) ... $300

'86 Miyata 610 (pristine) ... $440

All bikes were fully overhauled. Two of those I couldn't easily sell last year for $300, prepandemic. The '87 Trek was one of my best purchases. It had a ton of great '80s Campy on it, some of which I used for my Miyata 912. Bought for $300, but worth over $700, parted-out.

Gifted my old Falcon with mostly Campy NR to my nephew. He loves it!

Bought for myself a '72 Torpado for $300.

...

Bought a 20 year old 50cm Raleigh road bike frame to build up for one of my kids with 2x9 shifting using almost all spare parts. Bought a '95 trek 930, stripped it down and build back up with 1x9 and more modern components. It fits my wire better then her prior rigid mtb.

Nope, haven't sold any bikes.
Sold a bunch of components on ebay and here though.

Ooh, I gave awgave '87 Scwinn Prelude frame to a forum member. Forgot about that.

With prices cazy high, I didn't buy much this year.

From late june through the end of august, I sold 5 bikes and 5 frames, brought in ~$1700 gross. Spent almost $700 since september on 70 Falcon, 89 Pinarello, 89 Benotto, 89 cannondale Black Lightning, 96 Klein, 93 Barracuda hybrid, 70 Gitane that was cracked, and a mystery 64cm repaint. I think I may be wearing my wife's patience a bit thin. After moving enough the garage and basement were fairly clean for about 2 weeks, now I'm back to 15 bikes total, plus hers and the tandem. I can't imagine the market won't be fairly good again next year, no matter how many new bikes are available.

I got to say it was a good year.

I normally only sell at our cities bike swap once a year. I kept hearing about the bike market, so I finally started listing on CL. From late june through the end of august, I sold 5 bikes and 5 frames, with the highlight being a too small '90 Fuji/TST ti mountain bike. Mostly I focused on $150-250 basic transportation, 90s hybrids/mtbs. I think I was right around $1700 gross, with 2 Bianchi hybrids that I didn't get ready until too late.

Spent ~ $700 since september on:
70 Falcon San Remo,
89 Pinarello Montello,
89 Benotto 2000,
89 cannondale Black Lightning,
96 Klein Attitude,
93 Barracuda hybrid,
70 Gitane that was cracked,
and a mystery 64cm repaint.

I'm not sure any of these are "keepers"

Acquired a Wilier Mortirolo, a Ross Mt. Hood and a Merckx Corsa Extra frame/fork. The Wilier was for my daughter, I sold the Ross and built up the Merckx for myself. I sold a Pinarello Record, a Falcon Victory, a Peugeot PX-10, a Centurion Ironman, a Miyata 912 and a Gary Fisher Marlin.

You guys, I have spent about $3K on bikes this year and have yet to sell anything. I bought a Pinarello Montello that the previous own spray painted, so I’m setting up a spray booth in the basement for a Winter project. Then, there are the CBT Italia and a Colnago Mexico frames. Naturally, I’m outfitting all three with Campagnolo or panto parts. One could say that I have a problem. The ace up my sleeve is a set of WEBCO mags that I bought in 1978 for $20. These are selling for $1,500 right now. I’m about to post them as my first sale.

2020 was the year of downsizing. The price of project bikes shot up due to covid so I haven't purchased many.

4 Purchased, 2 were because a friend wanted them gone.
2 Picked up from the curb, 1 was recent which I still need to sell.
9 Sold for about $1600 in profit, counting the bikes and their costs that I bought pre 2020.

One of the 2020 purchases I kept, so -$260 from the above as I track keepers differently. This leaves me at 5 bikes currently with 1 still to sell.

Got for free: 3 (Schwinn entry-level alu roadie, Giant alu hybrid, Giant midrange alu roadie)
Sold: 4 bikes ('75 Columbia 3sp, Giant alu hybrid, Huffy cruiser, Motobecane mixte), 2 nice wheelsets, 1 seatpost, several cranksets, 1 derailleur, many other bits I don't remember.
Gave away: 1 Schwinn entry-level alu roadie to a COVID researcher, many small bits to friends
Traded: 1 Univega Specialissima done-up as a René Hubris rando build with all the extras to a Vermont friend in exchange for motorcycle help and long term storage.

Got two friends' Vitus 979s going with parts from my parts bin. Also equipped two other friends' Schwinn Voyageur SP and Nishiki Riviera GT with cranks and/or wheels. Goal is to get rid of the Giant alu roadie and a longtime junkpile resident, the Univega Viva Sport with bent fork. The Giant I should be able to sell, the Univega is not dangerous to ride, but is a giveaway situation because of the fork.

I have given away two, with two more to go. A repainted orange '72 Schwinn World Voyageur, with a top tube dent, and a '78 Schwinn World, Schwinn's first model imported from Giant. The World Voyageur was their first Panasonisc import.

I remember white flocked trees and color wheel lights were a thing.

a neighbor just had lights pro installed on the rafter and eaves of their house... we tell our son, first weekend in December.

then there is the annual debate of clear or colored lights

bought one bike this year.
