Road Etiquette Question: Hopping on a stranger's wheel?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

However, this is not a fixed distance because this is a function of your speed, and the direction and speed of the wind, as well as the cohesion of the snot rocket and the amount of ancillary liquid accompanying it.

So ... you're saying the weight of a snot rocket is more important than the aerodynamics of a snot rocket?

I've developed a policy based on the fact that arguments about online arcanum, minutia, etc. are worthless, irrelevant and silly. My policy is one response to a disagreement and then ignore. Oh sure, I'm not perfect, but I try. People who argue about this sort of stuff probably don't realize how silly and intransigent they appear. Reminds me of academics arguing about stuff that nobody cares about. Sometimes the best response is: "Oh well, agree to disagree" or "you're wrong but it doesn't matter to me"

Where I ride its a given that you ride on any wheel and anyone will draft yours. "The route" is known by all and we're all out pretty much riding for the same reason. Groups form randomly on the weekends. And there are big club rides that are great to ride with too. Just jump on the back when they ride by. I've found cyclists in my neck of the woods are welcoming to all if you display some riding competency or are trying hard to learn.
