Group of bikes with a scooter escort at the end?

I saw about 10 bikes riding as a group. The last person was on a motorcycle or scooter, like an escort.
Is this a thing for group bike rides? Do groups hire an escort rider for safety?
It definitely added to the safety factor, since you could not miss the moto

Did you happen to be in France when you saw this?

You'd have to ask them. For a group of 10, it doesn't sound like much of an event.

But anything is possible and don't expect it to be a normal thing for such big events!

....or maybe the scooter was unassociated and was waiting for an opportunity to safely pass?

Perhaps this…but they were just doing it in segments, and the moto was waiting for the next one.

It's a great idea, especially if they could carry extra water and food.

Could have been a club, or a local race team, maybe out training with the coach on the scooter, or even out to do some motor pacing later on!

Or the scooter was drafting to save on fuel. Petrol is getting expensive...

I've never seen a casual group ride with an escort, but bigger road races and relays always have race marshals, some in cars, most on motorcycles.

Our Tucson Wheelmen club coach would pace about a dozen of us in his new Volkswagon van, out Mt. Lemmon highway in the '70s.

Bringing up the rear is probably a value-add with a scooter. Many motorcyclists would question the degree of added visibility in the front, themselves.

group ride with Scooter at the end.
Maybe he just had a mechanical? I've heard he's a pretty strong rider.

a motorpacing ride would be my guess with a club team or something --- but that said, no idea why the scooter would be at the back

When the inmates at our county jail do their daily training ride, the sheriff rides a scooter.
