Front brake making loud noise
In the process of swapping a 105 group set for a dura ace 7700. Almost finished when I noticed the front STI makes a loud clicking noise when fully pressed. On further inspection it seems the the white plastic end cap on the cable hook unit (part nr 18 marked in red) is quite worn introducing some play and making the hole cable hook unit move when breaking.
On even further inspection it also seems that the same side of the actual mount/adapter (marked in green, part nr 15) is also quite worn on the right hand side where the worn cable house unit was fitted

- Does anyone know where I can buy a new cable hook unit? Tried one from the 105 groupset from the same era but that did not fit.
According to this ad https://www.ebay.com/itm/27491179818...mis&media=COPY it is the same part for:- Dura-Ace ST-7801 ST-7803 ST-7700 ST-7700-C
Ultegra ST-6600 ST-6603 ST-6510
105 ST-5600 ST-5600-S ST-5601 ST-5603
Tiagra ST-4600 ST-4603
Sora ST-3500 ST-3503
Claris ST-2400 ST-2403
- Dura-Ace ST-7801 ST-7803 ST-7700 ST-7700-C
- Do you think a new cable hook unit will be enough or is the actual mount/adapter (part nr 15) too worn? From the video I took (14 seconds in https://photos.app.goo.gl/bpGcfb8EobovAtgD6) it looks like the white plastic end cap of the cable hook unit is sliding up towards the worn part of the metal mount/adatper and it is the actual adapter causing the wear on the plastic end cap.

eBay. Twenty + year old part. A bike shop might have one in their back room, but that will take far too much time to locate.
No prediction on whether this will solve your problem. But plastic wears a lot faster than metal. Very dirty in there.
I've had other problems with the 7700 series STI levers. Over time, I replaced all of them with micro shift levers.

I wish you the best of luck fixing this. The thing you are dealing with does not seem very C&V, despite its 20 year age.
Perhaps, the solution to your problem is to revert back to a truly C&V solution - brake levers that are just brake levers and shifters on the down tube that are just shifters. It's just a thought.
After playing around with newer tech, I reverted back to my bike's original configuration and couldn't be happier with it.
Sometimes, many times, simpler is better.

I have a 7700 equipped bike from new. It may have 50 thousand miles or even more at this point. I also have a 4400 Tiagra bike from that same era. The dura ace does everything marginally better for certain. My experience is DA is just that much more finicky with age.
I had to replace a sticky freehub, those cable hooks, rear shifter, the BB more than once.
The Tiagra probably has similar mileage and nothing replaced but the BB.
Dura Ace is worth the extra trouble.
I would also check that there is no play in the cable housing as in connects to the STI levers.
It is easy to create a gap when re-wrapping the bars.
