Can these hubs be used with Shimano cassettes and indexed shifting, or do they require a proprietary Suntour 8-speed cassette?

^ I have the same question. Those are gorgeous!

Edit: Looks like from the VeloBase listing that they require a SunTour Powerflo cassette?

One will require the proprietary cassette and shifters.
If anyone has successfully managed to convert a Shimano cassette to work I'd like to hear how they did it.
Suntour AP cassettes are still available if you're patient. The pins that connect the cogs together as a collective can be removed so that other cogs can be swapped out. The appropriate spacers will also be needed.
Expect to pay a premium for the shifters.

I don't know that a Powerflo will work. Or to be precise, that a Superbe derailleur can shift the larger cogs in the Powerflo cassettes, as its max cog is 23 teeth. It seems they were aimed at the MTB market.

That’s some serious SunTour funkiness!

Powerflo is an option. The specific cassette model number for the Superbe Pro is CS-AP00-S8. One can additionally use CS-AP00-S7 if one has the appropriate spacer and an extra cog.
I have an example around here somewhere. I'll post a show-and-tell in a new thread if you are curious.

I presume that somebody, somewhere, in the last 30 years has attempted to put a Shimano freehub body on a Suntour hub. I am guessing it did not work.

No skewer?!

Last gen Suntour was about their Accushift indexing, which was not linear. The highest two shifts have a wider spacing than the first 4 (on a 7 speed cassette). Last generation also added Micro-Drive, which was a compact crankset paired with smaller cassettes where the last 2 cogs were a single piece to screw onto the freehub, rather than a single cog. I would double check the boxes to see if the hubs are listed as MD and AP, or just AP.

You can use these with the appropriate cassette with any shifter you'd like, in friction mode. For a full accushift indexed experience, you'd want at least a RD and rear shifter. FD and shifter are both friction anyway.

I am also interested in this NOS cassette from the LBS. I took an AP 7 speed cassette and made it into an 8 speed by taking an extra cog and spacer from a 2nd one and it works well.

BTW, if the buyer of these hubs is unable to spec a set of the Accushift 7/8 speed Superbe Pro down tube indexing shift levers, they could also search for a set of the 7/8 speed Accushift "Command" paddle shifters. Both will be nearly unobtainable for years at a time on eBay but if you are patient enough, they eventually do materialize only to be snatched up pretty quickly.

Isn't someone selling command shifters now?

Maybe these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/15374652560...mis&media=COPY

These would not index though.

I don’t see Command shifters in your link, and not the 8 speed index ones you would want to go with the Superbe Pro 8 speed freehub being discussed.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/26268972573...mis&media=COPY

This is the style I am referring to, it these are for 7 speed. Obviously, the price makes them not very interesting to me.

12-26 AP Accushift 8 cassette

The down tube levers are “SL”.
8 speed Accushift downtube levers.

Here's the solution for anyone willing to wait for an 8-speed cassette to appear out of the ether:

Close up of Superbe Pro spline pattern

A 21 tooth cog from a microdrive cassette. All Suntour cogs are interchangeable except for the lock ring cogs.

A 3mm plastic spacer

The main cassette body drops next

The first loose cog

Last cog/lockring. Voila! 8-speed

I dumped 2-3 NOS Suntour 7/8-speed cassettes at the local bike coop last year. I can see if they are still there.

Drool. I'm passing on 8-speed. Went 7 to 9. But I've got the shifters - the top-mounted DT Superbes that sit on the box. I'd have to dial in the friction for 8-speed. )

so if that helps sway someone toward a purchase of the hubs, send me a pm about the cassette and we can work out the pricing on that.

That cassette won't work because it's a microdrive. The Superbe Pro hub is spaced at 130. The microdrive cassette is for a 135 spaced hub. The 2-cog lockring will screw onto the Superbe hub but project past the hub locknut.
However, one could remove the pins on that cassette and use the cogs for The Superbe hub in conjunction with an AP 7-speed cassette with a single lock ring cog.
Thank you for the effort though, hazetguy. Oh! And the hubs are still available.

I'm now including the 7-speed Suntour cassette (CS-AP00-S7U) 12-13-14-15-16-17-19 plus the extra spacer and 21 tooth cog to make it an 8-speed cassette, inclusive in the price of $150. You'll still need the Superbe Pro 8-speed shift levers for indexed shifting.
Shipping to USA only, Paypal friends and family.
