Can these hubs be used with Shimano cassettes and indexed shifting, or do they require a proprietary Suntour 8-speed cassette?

If anyone has successfully managed to convert a Shimano cassette to work I'd like to hear how they did it.
Suntour AP cassettes are still available if you're patient. The pins that connect the cogs together as a collective can be removed so that other cogs can be swapped out. The appropriate spacers will also be needed.
Expect to pay a premium for the shifters.

I presume that somebody, somewhere, in the last 30 years has attempted to put a Shimano freehub body on a Suntour hub. I am guessing it did not work.

Last gen Suntour was about their Accushift indexing, which was not linear. The highest two shifts have a wider spacing than the first 4 (on a 7 speed cassette). Last generation also added Micro-Drive, which was a compact crankset paired with smaller cassettes where the last 2 cogs were a single piece to screw onto the freehub, rather than a single cog. I would double check the boxes to see if the hubs are listed as MD and AP, or just AP.
You can use these with the appropriate cassette with any shifter you'd like, in friction mode. For a full accushift indexed experience, you'd want at least a RD and rear shifter. FD and shifter are both friction anyway.

I am also interested in this NOS cassette from the LBS. I took an AP 7 speed cassette and made it into an 8 speed by taking an extra cog and spacer from a 2nd one and it works well.
BTW, if the buyer of these hubs is unable to spec a set of the Accushift 7/9 speed Superbe Pro down tube indexing shift levers, they could also search for a set of the 7/8 speed Accushift "Command" paddle shifters. Both will be nearly unobtainable for years at a time on eBay but if you are patient enough, they eventually do materialize only to be snatched up pretty quickly.

A 21 tooth cog from a microdrive cassette. All Suntour cogs are interchangeable except for the lock ring cogs.
A 3mm plastic spacer
The main cassette body drops next
The first loose cog
Last cog/lockring. Voila! 8-speed

Drool. I'm passing on 8-speed. Went 7 to 9. But I've got the shifters - the top-mounted DT Superbes that sit on the box. I'd have to dial in the friction for 8-speed.

not sure if the hubs have sold, but i was going through my freewheel bin and found an 8 speed APII cassette, 11-28, nos w/ instructions.
so if that helps sway someone toward a purchase of the hubs, send me a pm about the cassette and we can work out the pricing on that.

However, one could remove the pins on that cassette and use the cogs for The Superbe hub in conjunction with an AP 7-speed cassette with a single lock ring cog.

I'm now including the 7-speed Suntour cassette (CS-AP00-S7U) 12-13-14-15-16-17-19 plus the extra spacer and 21 tooth cog to make it an 8-speed cassette, inclusive in the price of $150. You'll still need the Superbe Pro 8-speed shift levers for indexed shifting.
