To Summarize:
1. Adding Women's Madison
2. Madison gained lap is +20 points - scoring same as points race.
3. Omnium now consists of scratch, tempo race, elimination and points race, drops timed events, all races in a single day.
4. Sprint round changes: 28 riders start (up from 24). Fastest 4 qualifying times skip 1/16 round, go straight into 1/8 finals.
5. 1K & 500M TT, two riders on the track during quals. Finals are raced individually.
6. Kerin derny off at 3 laps-to-go instead of 2.
7. Team pursuit: two teams simultaneously during quals, no finals for 5-8th.
8. Team sprint added first round.

Seems like the 750m and 375m qualifying distance for the Kilo/500m was dropped.

As someone new to track (kinda) I liked it was so different than a crit event. Now it seems less so. New coach seems to believe it is less of a jump from road to track, but at the same time more random.

This seems like the real reason for the changes to the omnium - get well known road riders onto the track.

Eh. Sports evolve.

If the ultimate objective is to have more high-level participants and hopefully attract more fans (which translates to more ad money which means larger payouts) then I'm fine with it.

At the end of the day, it's entertainment and if it's not entertaining, then it will die out.

I still think the Kilo is the ultimate test of manhood (or womanhood).

Hahahaha, I guess.

I think it should be a women's event, too. I never really understood why the women race shorter distances. Never got a good answer as to the history behind that.

I've only seen one woman ever do a kilo in person. She vowed never to do it again if she didn't have to. Kinda like me

Yeah I don't understand or like that either. Women only get to ride 75% of the distance men do in pursuits. Looks like we've not only got a wage gap, but a track time gap as well.

Progress from this perception (https://totalwomenscycling.com/lifes...ca-1895-14951/) is apparently slow.

Women are the inferior sex, of course. Full distances would simply be too much for them to cope with... ()

Same with us frail Masters. The whole knocking the kilo down to 750 then 500 is utterly ludicrous and indefensible. No possible (rational) justification, and it becomes a completely different event. No offense to all you masters who are forced to make it your reason for living, but the 500 is a joke... We have the 200/match sprint... and we have the pursuit events. The Kilo is the perfect mid-point for reasons I am never shy about mentioning (anaerobic energy systems giving out somewhere around 50-60 seconds). 500/750 make no sense, and seems like a classic random poor decision made by a committee with very little thought or attention to unintended consequences.

Not that I feel strongly about it. :

I'm not familiar with track and field (athletics) events. Do men and women run the same distances or are the women's events shorter as well?

They do the same distances. Only differences I can think of:
- Women do 100m hurdles sprint while men do 110m (why?! No idea)
- Women do the heptathlon (7 multi skilled events), while men have the decathlon (10).

Heck, nowadays it takes me 500m to get up to speed.

Thanks!

Yeah, I don't know why they shorten things for Masters either. The 750 and 500M are way different physiologically than the Kilo, too!

I really don't understand any of this.

I think the committee thought that by shortening the races, they would save time, on the assumptions that us old folks take longer to go around the oval.

Another thought is that while some love the kilo, it does hurt, a lot. Maybe the powers that be thought there would not be competitors at the older ages if they required the kilo.
