I'd state it's Miele (as in Honey in Italian). Me el le.

The le is like let.

Being of German heritage I always pronounced it Me-Lay, but I see that is clearly wrong (unless you are looking at the vaccum cleaner of the same spelling).....

Val D'or

This Val D'or has Superbe Pro and no tubing decal. This one is probably for T-Mar. I can't remember the tubing on the Val D'or. I remember thinking at the time it came down the line that the Val D'or was an okay bike, but tubing and gruppo escapes me. Anyone know what was the OEM and tubing on this model?

That should be a 1989 Val d'Or. It's definitely post 1988 based on the graphics and it's not included in my 1990 price list. The 1988 version was spec'd with SunTour Superbe, as fitted on the subject bicycle. The tubeset was Columbus SL. However, this is a fairly tall frame, so it might be SP.

Columbus SL/SP matches my sanity check based on the subject bicycle's frame features. During this era, models with Columbus tubesets typically had the front derailleur braze-ons but the mid-range models with Columbus Cromor generally didn't receive the embossed stay caps. The lack of chrome plating, other than fork, indicates it's not SLX/SPX or one of the higher SL/SP models.

Of course, Columbus SL/SP can always be verified by a detailed examination. Columbus SL will use a 27.2mm seat post while SP will use 27.0mm Both will have the Columbus steerer tube with helical ridge on the inside, at the bottom, but won't have the helical ridges on the inside of BB ends of the tubes and chain stays, like SPX/SLX. I'm not aware of any Miele with tubesets more exotic than Columbus SLX/SPX.

Some members may be questioning dayles recalling an SL-Superbe model as only being "okay'. Only one year earlier, there were four models above the Val d'Or and it was probably the same for 1989. So, while the specs were high grade, it was only 5th in the line-up. Also, at the time, SunTour's reputation was suffering due to the relatively poor performance of AccuShift.

When is the bike rally in Toronto when we can all gather and show off all these beauties? There has been a vintage/bike show at Trinity Bell Square in the past but obviously it got cancelled last year. Hopefully this year it might happen.

Wow Dayles, that's a Supernice Miele!! Is it originally bought in New Zealand? The Superbe Pro group looks great! I just gave away a crank, but it wasn't nearly as shiny as yours.

Man, for us Torontonians, a sweet Miele came up on FB marketplace today for $50. I reached out to the seller and they said yes, but come and get it now which i couldn't as I am working today and it was in the East end of Toronto and I live west of the GTA.

it would be great to get together. Hopefully later in the summer we will have a bit of an opening we can gather.

I am the original owner. I bought it in 1986 or so in Northern Toronto from a local bike shop at the time.
The colour is the teal which changes shade depending on the time of day or artificial light.
The derailleurs are Shimano SIS with the chainring being an oval "Sugino VP".
The frame has the "Tange 900" sticker on it.

I had briefly listed it for sale and had a number of buyers willing to pay what I was selling it for; I had listed it for $450 CAD.

I realize it doesn't have some of the higher end components including padded bar tape, group set, and hidden brake cables.

What is everyone's thoughts on a reasonable Canadian price to sell it? (I realize Covid is helping the demand)?

Edit: I should mention I did swap out the original cassette and replaced it with this one back in the late eighties. Otherwise, no other changes made and is original.

Thank you for your insights.

Would anyone happen to know the correct measurements for a replacement bottom bracket? I'm looking to replace the cup and cone BB with a sealed cartridge Shimano UN 26 or 55. Would it be a 68mm x 113mm?

Thank you

It would be a 68mm shell, but for the spindle length go with the same size you have now. If it's not marked on the spindle somewhere, measure the length.

Same name but two different companies.
Miele the bike company is named after Jim Miele, an Italian who immigrated to Toronto, Canada.
He wasn’t happy with the bikes available in Canada at the time (in the 70’s I believe) and so decided to start building his own.

Miele, the home appliance brand, is a German company, dating back to 1899. They did manufacture bicycles and motorcycles from the mid-1920s to circa 1960. However, the Miele brand that turns out most frequently on this forum is the Canadian brand originally owned by the Guvin company of Mississauga. The first models were produced circa 1979 and the company survived into the mid-1990s. In 2002 the founder, Jim Miele, sold the brand name to Procycle, shortly before passing away in 2003.

Does anyone know of a Miele bike catalog identifying the different models created through the 1980's? There always seems to be a model listed on the markets that I've never seen before, so you wonder what the quality was at the time?

Rare Miele sighting in SC

It is really rare to see Mieles down here, but one popped up on FB a week ago.

Great colour and a good price for a Miele in this bike boom stage. Up here in Toronto the bikes are selling from anywhere between $500-1000, varying on what condition they are in.

You really don't need to know the different models to get an appreciation for the level of the bicycle. All you need to know is the tubeset and the component group. If you have a basic understanding of the groups and tubesets of the era, you should be good. This doesn't apply to just Miele but any brand. Besides, most Miele that turn up are anonymous, with the model name having long disappeared or been forgotten.

However, if you're ever in doubt, I have a pretty good appreciation for the late 1980s to early 1990s Miele models, so just post the bicycle and mention me in the post, so that I receive a notification.

I think it's actually a 59cm, but it seems decently in nice shape.

Thanks T-Mar I feel like I've asked you so many questions since I joined this forum that I should give you a break ha ha but you are the source for vintage bike knowledge. Here is the bike in question that's currently posted on marketplace and I've never seen one like it. Listed with Shimano 600 (doesn't list out specific components) and reasonably priced in this current market. Needs a good cleaning but otherwise, in decent shape from pictures.

No problem. helping out (and educating) people is why I joined the forum. The subject bicycle is a Miele Uno MS. It is circa 1990. It was Miele's bottom of the line road model at that time. Typically, these turn up with a Tange #5, plain gauge, CrMo, main triangle, mated to hi-tensile stays and forks. The components definitely are NOT Shimano 600 but several steps lower. Those brakes are Shimano Z-series. The front derailleur is also Z-series. I can't positively identify the rear derailleur but it's also lower, possibly a Z-series or Light Action. The crankset look like an upper, entry level Sakae product. The rims appear to be a Miele branded Ambrosio product and should be 700C. Original MSRP would have been around $350-$375 CDN.

Great information T-Mar, as always. The branding (logo) seems to change on the bikes in the 90's from the earlier bikes. That's great that you listed original price as well. Shows me that the bikes I see listed these days have really gained in value!
