1974 Schwinn Paramount Restoration Completed

This bike certainly seems to have seen some things. Now, it has fresh life to see some more. I considered a repaint, and that option may still be explored. (It was already repainted once.) But until then, I wanted to get it out and riding. Per the serial number, it is a 1974. A number of things are non-original, but I tried to get as close as practical. And yes, those are cheap Kenda tires, but everything is currently backordered, and I'm having to wait on the Continentals. In all, not too bad for a bike nabbed from the local co-op. Thanks again to all those who offered their advice and assistance.

As brought home.

Finished.

As brought home.

Finished.

As brought home.

Finished with replaced front derailleur.

Unfortunately, I lost the pinch bolt parts for this SunTour, which resulting in a change in freewheel and back to a Campi Nuevo Record.

Rescued from the parts bin at the co-op...

...and cleaned/polished.

...and cleaned/polished w/ replacement Cane Creek hoods.

Nicely done - always like to see a frame that's earned it's hard knocks get nicely refurbished, but not overdone or consumed by the ordeal that is a repaint. It's character - and this Paramount definitely wears it with pride.

Very nice. The cable housing for the rear derailleur can probably be shortened a fair bit.

Your original front derailleur had no lip on the front of the outer cage but your new one does. There was a time when the crank design was moved out a tad to accommodate this lip. You may not have any issues but if you do feel the front touch the crank arm and the limit screws are adjusted properly this is likely why.

You actually pointed this out on an accompanying post (thank you!), so I paid close attention when setting the limits. Thankfully, it shifts fine with no contact on the chain ring. Thanks again for the pointer.

Well there you go. I'm getting old, senile and I'm repeating myself.

@Hailstorm_7

I love it when this happens, old bones, new life, looks great, well done.

Those Kenda's look more like what this probably came with and would have been replaced with.

ya know, I have used a CPSC mech with a Pre-‘ crank and have had no trouble. It does require thoughtful set up and an ever so slight tweak to the forward outboard cage but that helps the downshift too. But you are correct that the rejiggling of the dimensions of the crank arm was to provide room for the cage.

Well, but I regret that I have yet to take it out for a real decent mileage check.

I would carefully radius that cage with a Dremel in the short term and keep my eye out for a good cage or complete down the road.

They lightened all kinds of things back in the day.

Awesome! Thanks for saving this one. Most folks would think this was just an old Schwinn not worth a second look. You've gotten it to a really good place. You could take this a few different ways. A repaint would obviously take it to new heights but you also have the option of riding the heck out of it as is. I personally have a lot of respect for riders with patina, possibly more than garage queen full resto lookers. I bet you'll enjoy this one quite a bit.

For me, a Schwinn Paramount, is the “Holy Grail” for my years left on this planet! In my mind, I’m prepared to pay a bit of a premium but I’m truly hoping to find one that others consider to be just a “tired old Schwinn” that’s been kicked to the curb .
