Shimano 9 Speed Compatibility Question

I am pretty sure all Shimano 9 speed road and MTB components are compatible, but I wanted to double check. Will the newer 9-speed Sora STI road shifters work properly with a 9-speed Deore MTB long cage rear derailleur?

Thanks

Bikes: Too many. Giant Trance X 29, Surly Midnight Special get the most time.

You should be OK.

So far the only inconsistency I've read about is that Shimano 4700 Tiagra (10s) uses the same shift ratio as the 11s components.

I am using Tiagra 4500, 9 speed, with a Deore long cage RD. No issues.

Hold on one second. The latest Sora R3000 2X9 drivetrain uses the 4700 pull ratio for the FD. So the R3000 FD and front Brifter are not interchangeable with earlier 9 speed drivetrains.
Now the Sora R3030 3X9 drivetrain, on the other hand, does use the same pull ratio as earlier 9 speed drivetrains, and is interchangeable with earlier drivetrain.

A bit different from what you want to know, but you can get 9 speed freewheels and 9 speed cassettes. They are not compatible without changing the hub or wheel.

Thanks. I am only asking about rear derailleur compatability though so I guess I should be fine then?

I seem to recall that later Specialized AWOL's used today's Sora with an Alivio RD and 12-36 cassette.

The RD should be compatible all across the board for all Shimano 9 speed shifters and brifters

Generally yes it all should work quite nicely. As some have noted there are some minor bits and bobs that are odd especially as things get more modern and 9 speed starts getting further relegated to the bottom end but you can generally get it to work or just go Gevenalle and forget the complex STI levers that you can't really rebuild. Friction front shifting is superior anyway unless you have Di2 or similar.

Freewheels became sort of dead with 7 speed, yes one could find one up to 10 speed last I remember seeing but why? Seriously they are junky and the design of the freewheel hub just isn't as good as a cassette hub. Very important for old 5 or 6 speed stuff where cassettes are tough to get unless looking at old Uniglide stuff or trying to build your own cause your crazy but at that point IRD has quality freewheels so no need to worry.
