The universe was so small before the internet.

I love this. Someone make one.

With a nice lightweight bike it might work...maybe after we build our ski bike!

The chances of me running across Glide-O-Bike in a search were pretty small. I'm glad you reposted it.

What... No helmet????

In my younger days I would have probably wanted one.

I notice that the one in the foreground even has fenders.

Anyone have the plans for this machine? Sounds tempting.

All you need is some model airplane plans, multiply everything by 10, and add a bike. Kind of like the Flight of the Phoenix movie.

Great marketing!

"Look at the picture above. Look how the Glide-O-Bike's front wheel is taking off the ground. She goes gliding along, Fellows, and that's not all. You can bank, ground-loop, stall and side-slip. Absolutely nothing like this for fun and thrills."

I don't know what a ground loop is, or a side-slip, but we are talking about wind assisted wheelies here...

Now after closer reading, I know for sure I would have bought one of these in my younger days... and I would have wondered why it wouldn't really fly!

I tried to convince my mom once that a submarine in the back of a comic book was real because it seemed real to me... Until she told me what fiber board was. I was all set to bring it to the lake too...

With the struts attached to the front axle, I am not going to ask how one balances the thing to get it going.

I'm sure it would if you took it down a hill steep enough!

Not sure what you'd do about landing though!

Didn't take note of that when I first saw the photo.

Now if one could just attach that wing section to the frame, set up the handlebars to control the ailerons, and stabilizers hooked up to a Sturmey twist-grip, then you've got something.

Heck, run a secondary chain to a pusher prop in back. Once you're off the ground, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to get it spinning at a good clip. Of course, the moment you're back down, the FAA will be on your behind

Take care,

-Kurt

That is what the "side slip" and "ground loop" are for...it is called crashing

Actually, the FAA, as I understand it, leaves you alone as long as your craft's total weight is under a certain weight... I seem to recall that it is under 150 pounds or something like that. Ultralights require no licensing.

In fact, I was working a joint effort with the FAA, and I was walking with a couple of FAA people past the ultra-light section of the big Oshkosh air show during a break, and they saw an ultra-light towing a hang glider and they were trying to figure out whether the weight should be combined or not in considering if it still qualified as an ultra-light.

So, if you built your Glide-O-Bike light enough, the FAA will leave you completely alone.

Just keep your health insurance card with you.

I'm always amazed and delighted by what you could get plans for back then.

YIKES!

No roll, pitch, or yaw control, so NO CONTROL!

This contraption is an accident waiting to happen, but of course this was long before our society became so litigious, which is probably a good thing for the Glide-O-Bike Company.

The first thing the kid would do after building a Glide-O-Bike is look for the highest hill around (preferably with a cliff on one side) and pedal into the wild blue yonder. I bet the orthopedic docs loved these things.

Well, the Glide-O-Bike is at least as plausible as growing Sea-Monkeys. I fell for the SeaMonkey scam and the X-Ray glasses. Probably I was thinking I could see through Mrs. SeaMonkey's clothes with the X-Ray specs. After all, in the advertisement, Mrs. SeaMonkey had a dress and wore a string of pearls. To my great shock, of course, Mrs. SeaMonkey did not have clothes and neither did the rest of the SeaMonkey family!
