Rats! - Just Destroyed My Rear Derailleur
Earlier today I was commenting on older derailleurs and possible finds. One of the comments noted the Suntour V and Vx series as good period derailleurs and I promptly went over to ebay for a purchase.
Well after the purchase I went out for a short ride. Confidently skipping over a small branch in the roadway I suddenly realized a completely locked up rear wheel. I immediately came to a stop with skills resurrected from long long ago. Somehow that little branch had made its way up into my rear derailleur and twisted the long cage into my spokes and then fractured my derailleur pins with a twist. My recognition of the problem and quick stop kept the derailleur arm from damaging my spokes. This evening I checked the spokes and wheel, straightened out the derailleur hanger and mounted a SunRace plastic M40 till my Suntour Vx comes in. Oh well... No big damage except for my poor little Shimano Derailleur. MoJo can be a real bugger... Ha

Oh well. Stuff happens. All sorts of crap can get tangled up in a rear derailleur. Not long ago I fixed one that was completed twisted up with a handful of human hair. Very odd.

I blame it on the large Shimano logo on the biggest cog. Derailleur saw that and had a stroke.

My biggest SunTour heartbreaks were breaking a Cyclone front derailleur clamp and a platform pedal cage. I have used a lot of SunTour products over the years, and they always worked well for me.

I had that happen to me one evening at the end of a very long ride. It was a Sora long cage derailleur. I was lucky to be able to remove the chain from the wrecked derailleur and then use the bike as a single speed to get home.

Resulted in bent dropout on my ’89 Cinelli “mens sana..” currently at Hans Sneijder’s for repair.
