My Schwinn road frame has 32s on old Ambrosio rims. 32 is the skinniest tire I have any use for. OTOH, any wider for that bike and I’d want new brakes with better clearance and wider rims.

It's a long ass way around that track on a bicycle, particularly when you're accustomed to watching cars go around in 40 seconds.

To the question, 32mm, and that's only because GP5000s don't come any wider.

why do you run with the big dog in the back? On my cx bike I run a 32 knobby up front and a 25 slick on the back.

Honestly, cuz i am fat.

I also run a smoother tire in the rear as well with a Sammy Slick knobby on the front. I am a fatter individual so I like a little bigger in the rear so I can salvage some spokes if I get to aggressive. Luckily I have had good luck with my choices.

Back in the late '80's I did TT's on 19's...sketchy in the turns...oh inflated to 130psi...didn't dare go higher...never flatted or had any problems but I went back to 21's and was much more confident.
I use Conti 5000's at 25mm and 90psi...love this combo

Anecdotally, I have had several riders tell me that the new Conti 5000 tires listed as 23mm are the same as the old 4000 25's. The clearance on my front is really tight, so I guess I have to just go with what works and to heck with the listed size.

26" x 1.5", which will soon return to craigslist from where they came. Pedals hitting the ground when turning went from never to always on a '90s MTB with those tires.

Flip that. The old 4000 in 23 would be the same size as the new 5000 in 25. The 4000 series was notoriously wider than stated.

I have 25mm tires on 2 bikes. Both are older(33 years and 25 years) so they cant fit anything wider, otherwise I would have 28s on both.

I have to go get a new coin battery for my digital calipers. In the meantime, here are the 3 rims the tires will be mounted on.

Continental responded to the updated ETRTO standards for (wider) expected rim width that came out before the 5000 series. The standards respond to the trend of using wider rims, and manufacturers have adjusted tires to provide nominal tire width on the anticipated wider rim. That change means that the newer tire of a given nominal width will be slightly narrower than the older version on the same rim.
