WTB/WTT a couple Italian threaded bottom brackets

I've grown tired of banging my head on a couple Italian frames in my basement (Conti Special and Atala Super Pro) and decided I should at least build them up so I can begin tripping on them instead, and maybe ride them every now and then. I started on the Conti and got to the point where I needed to install the drivetrain, only to realize I have no Italian threaded bottom brackets in my stash.

The Conti is going to be an "eclectic" build, basically whatever I have that fits. It will have Galli derailleurs and brakes, Modolo Corsa levers, not sure about the cranks yet. I'd be happy with your basic a Italian threaded cartridge bottom bracket (Tange, Shimano, whatever) with spindle length of 113-115mm.

I'll try to make the Atala more true to its probable Campagnolo heritage, so a Campy bb with 70-SS spindle would be nice.

I can purchase or trade. Hunting for non-existent Italian threaded parts, I discovered a number of British threaded bottom brackets. I'd be happy to sacrifice some of them on the Italian altar.

I have an Italian threaded Campy cartridge BB in my BB box. I think it is Chorus or similar level. I will have to measure the length. Will get back to you tomorrow morning with that information!

I would be interested in one!

I would offer something in return but I suspect that is the last thing you want. 😬

Yeah, I saw that. Only $7.95 on eBay. The description said it was for a triple. Might that cause problems on an older double setup (other than a bit larger Q factor)?

I have one of these and if I remember correctly it gave me a good chainline on my circa 1990 Athena crank. I plan to be building up the Bianchi again in the near future and will try to remember to let you know when I get it back on. I’m drawing a blank on the taper but I think this is the pre-ISO Campy taper if anyone more knowledgeable can chime in? And I think it was the Veloce level cartridge BB for the mid 90s lower road groups.

I have a 111mm spindle ITA Chorus or Croce level BB somewhere that should fit the late 80s/early 90s Campy cranks that need the 111 length. Shoot me a PM if that’s the direction you want to go. I may also have an ITA Triomphe around 115, so mid 80s.

Again on the taper I think you only want to match certain Campy spindles to the appropriate era cranks. Was looking all this up like two years ago so I’ve slept a few times since and forgotten more than I originally knew. If you’re using JIS taper cranks (most everyone else) best to stick with JIS BBs. Best of luck!

Mine is 102mm. Probably too narrow!

If anyone else wants it, let me know!

Thanks. I won't be able to check today until late, but most of my candidate cranks will be pre-index era Campy Record or GS. (In fact, when I bought the Conti, it had a five-arm GS crank. I think I have a three-arm as well.)

Okay, I took a look at what I have. It's an odd bunchL Galli arms, 3- and 5-arm Campy GS (both have chainrings), early SunTour Superbe, and various Sugino Mighty (or Mighty Comp, could never figure out the diff). I also have an orphan 1974 Campy Record drive-side arm which I decided not to sell some time ago because of cracks in the spider. I just filed them out and tossed it up on the Pay It Forward thread.

Back to bottom brackets. Looks like something Campy-ish (at least in dimensions) would be best. I think I'll put the Galli crank on the Conti to go along with the derailleurs and brale calipers, and maybe the 5-arm GS on the Atala unless something better comes along.

I've got a Dura Ace 7400 BB with caged bearings, the original sleeve, and matched crank bolts, Italian thread. 113mm. $50 shipped.

I've also got a set of new, unmarked chrome steel Italian thread cups (DS & NDS) with Shimano-style splines and rubber dust seals. Yours for $10 plus shipping.

I asked the eBay seller if it was ISO or JIS. The response was JIS. It would seem that in addition to the 2mm longer spindle than earlier Campy Record stuff, the ISO-crank-on-JIS-spindle would sit out even further. From Sheldon Brown:
If you install an ISO crank on a J.I.S. spindle, it will sit about 4.5 mm farther out than it would on an ISO spindle of the same length.
So, as tempting as the price is, it probably won't work for my needs. (Would be different if I had a JIS crank I'd be willing to hang on these frames, but I don't. I'm trying to use up existing stock, so not looking to purchase a crank...)

Thanks, but the 7400 BB's low-profile JIS tape will likely be an even worse fit for an ISO crank, as my crank would likely bottom out. Again, Sir Sheldon:
Some older Shimano Dura Ace used a shorter taper than most other cranks. Most modern cranks will bottom out on the spindles from these cranks

I'm afraid the Italian cups won't help, as I don't have a suitable spindle for a 70mm shell either.

I have an Italian 114.5mm OmniRacer square taper, Ti spindle.
Mounted but too wide for Racing T. Very light, but new, is a $95 wallop.
Negotiable.
