Your Ride Reports - October 2021

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Ride Reports - October 2021

If you are new to posting on this thread, or if you are new to cycling, we welcome you! If you are returning from a previous thread, we welcome you, too.

This thread is for anyone who rides a bicycle ... or unicycle, tricycle, tandem, etc.

Are you an experienced road cyclist? Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? Do you ride weekends? Do you spin at home or in the gym? Is Zwift your thing? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Touring? Audax/Randonneuring?
Or are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid?

There are no set challenges - this is a mixed-ability / mixed-experience / everyone welcome group.

Just pick the target that you would like to achieve this month and post updates throughout the month as you work toward your target. We love seeing photos of your rides and hearing all about them.

Given the current situation many of us will be cycling solo or indoors. Don't feel alone! Share your accomplishments with us.

25 gravel and asphalt miles yesterday on my Rock Combo with new Schwalbe Land Cruiser tires. I wanted something more aggressive than the 1.25s that were on it when it came home with me. These do exactly what I wanted: more purchase and control on loose stuff, smooth and quiet on pavement. Saw a coyote, several antelope, half a dozen mule deer does, four Red Tail Hawks. And this fine old building going to ruin. I figured it was a school, wrong configuration for a dwelling. Chimney on both ends so big kids over there and little kids over here, everyone keeping warm by the stove. Too bad it's falling apart, a piece of local history. Local guy on a four wheeler stopped and confirmed it had been a school but didn't know the name. Said all the old guys had died or moved away. This is about 15 miles north of Cheyenne and a mile east of I25.

The weather is slightly nicer in Tampa. A few degrees cooler in the morning and not quite as humid. Saturday I started out, but then realized I forgot my water bottles after 1 1/2 miles. Went back home, got the bottles and set off again. I did my Picnic to Davis Is ride with the extra bottle trip for 43 miles. Sunday I did the regular Picnic to Davis Is route for 40 miles.

I was in the Ocala Nat Forest last weekend. Saturday did a 40 mile ride on the paved roads. Sunday I did another 40 miles, but 20 were unpaved.

Still warm on California's Central Coast.

I completed my first organized 100km last Sunday. My wife, who has already completed a normal century, encouraged me to do it. We trained for the last 3 months and rode a 62 and 64 miler in the two weeks before the event.

This weekend, we're going to do my first century. Just my wife and I. Wish me luck! -Joel

So far, we've done one ride of about 10.5 km after work on Wednesday. We were greeted by 14 little peepers and their guardian . 🙂

Snap three-day lockdown here in Tasmania (hopefully ending tonight). We're allowed out for a two hour exercise period as long as we stick within a 5km radius of home...

Decided to see just how far I could push myself while sticking in those parameters.

Distance: 63.9 km (39.7 miles)
Elevation: 595 metres (1950 feet)
Av Speed: 33.0 kph (20.5 mph)

Total elapsed time: 1 hr 56 min 4 seconds

I even got home with a couple of minutes to spare! 😅

Saturday I rode to Weedon Is. for 40 miles. It was hot and humid. Sunday I went to Thonotosassa for 40 miles and the weather has finally changed to fall mode. Nice and cool, but breezy.

We just stayed in and Zwifted.

Where did you ride? Up and down the cycleway?

First we went for a bicycle ride ... and no, I did not touch up that photo at all. It's just a snap from my phone and it really is very bright green out here!

And then I went for a walk.

I'm over on the Eastern side, so had enough quiet roads to ride. I did have to chuck a few u-turns to stick within the 5km limit though!

Starting to warm up here in Tasmania. Ducked out for a couple of hours on the classic Trek 5200.

Another beautiful weather day in the Ocala Nat Forest. Saturday's ride was 40 miles mix of paved and non paved. Saw a deer and some wild turkey. Sunday I had to cut some piles of tree branches so no riding.

Rainy and cool day on Saturday. Normally, I would probably skip the bike ride, but went anyways. A wet and messy 40 mile ride to Upper Tampa Bay trail. Sunday legs felt like crap, but kept going to the next landmark until I got my 40 miles around S. Tampa.

I do about 300-350 miles a month as a recreational rider. Been like that for a couple decades. Riding in cold weather more due to Covid to stay out of the gym.
