Riding post-Covid?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Out of about ten or so triathletes / cyclists I know who have recently had it, one is still not quite back to his old self and says he still feels it in his lungs.

Doing an antibodies test, it turns out I didn’t catch it despite my wife and some of our friends getting it.

Well, it's been a few months. Time for the OP to give us an update. Fingers crossed for a positive outcome.

Anxious to see how the DVT situation is going. Good to see he is still cycling. A friend got it some years ago. He had to give up cycling for a few years.

The conditions in RVA are not optimal for outdoor riding at the moment.(similar to a lot of the USA) If he's doing outdoor rides that would make him a Flahute! Does his last name include double consonants by chance?

Missed this but I dredged the thread up because someone else posted about riding post-covid. I had a follow up ultrasound a couple weeks ago and they cleared me, looks like the clot fully resolved without ever making its way to my lungs/brain, so I went off the blood thinner and had my first outdoor ride. Riverside loop, of course... took WhyFi on that route when he visited RVA a while back.

That said, I think lack of sleep, excess caffeine, and maybe dehydration plus the lingering fear of embolism/death due to the clot triggered what I suppose was a panic attack over the weekend, had to be driven to the ER after getting extremely disoriented an hour or two after a trainer ride and having chest pains/shortness of breath. They did a chest CT and found evidence of cardiomegaly, which I know very little about but they recommended I follow up with a cardiologist to rule out anything more serious.

To be honest, I'd never choose to get Covid or a clot, but in terms of riding limitations I'm glad it happened when it did. I was cleared to return to outdoor rides basically right when I'd switch from trainer to outdoors anyway, since I'm a wimp with cold weather. This weekend looks like it's gonna be lovely so I'm hoping I can get in my first 3+ hour ride in probably 6 months!

Good to hear you're riding again. Look up Myocarditis among college athletes post Covid. It's more common than you think.

Was that upper and lower Riverside and Cherokee/Old Gun as well? Nice! The last few times I've been on upper Riverside the cars are flying through there. It's so pretty up there. More like Wintergreen than the middle of Richmond. Still, it's a good route to downtown for me. MTT runs through that area frequently during training season. That area on Semmes around the building you work/used to work in has really changed. Heck, a whole lot of the city is being transformed. Lots of good options for those that want to live in the City. Now we have the Fall Line Trail being built. Sweet! Within a decade we might be able to go all the way to DC.

I haven't been on a bike of any kind in a month. I got a perineal injury in mid February. All I can say is, "it must be really painful for females to birth a kid!" It finally healed up enough that I can start back up. Now Storming Of Thunder Ridge and the climb up the Blue Ridge is looming in May. I have to get back training hard.

I took WhyFi on the full loop from the Fan out across the Belvidere bridge and on out to Old Gun, it's my favorite loop in the area. There's still a quarter mile of terror where the bike route crosses the Powhite on-ramp on Forest Hill, they've been doing road work for about 2 years but it should be done soon and they're adding a bike lane from what I can tell. I also did an east end ride a week or two ago and saw a bunch of timers for a self-start marathon on the cap trail, I guess Sportsbackers was trying to get people to register for the marathon without a mass start event? My company is actually just north of the river rather than Manchester, we just bought our building on 5th street as well as the parcel next to it for a future office development, nice to feel as if I have job security for as long as I want it with the way they've invested in Richmond.

That's a great route. I don't think you can avoid the Forest Hill Toll area if you want to do both upper and lower Riverside.

What you saw in the East End is the way the running events are done currently. Sportsbackers did their events in the fall that way last year. It works well. The courses start in Dorey Park. It's an out and back on the Cap trail. The courses open early in the morning and all day for the whole weekend. SAG stations are open. You walk up with a mask on and social distance while you are picking up your stuff. Then you walk up to the start and take off. Get away from the start and take your mask off. Do your thing and finish. Then put your mask back on and go back to social distancing. I was signed up for the half marathon that weekend and the Shamrock Half this past weekend. I tried to run on the Monday of the first weekend but couldn't. Finally was able to run on Wednesday of that week. Ran that half then the Shamrock half this past weekend. Did OK in both. The Shamrock had the same format. I drove to VA Beach Saturday morning and checked into my beachfront hotel around noon. It was less than a block to the start. Then I changed clothes, walked out and ran the half. Sat on the balcony the rest of the day taking in the beach. Good times.

I had symptoms very early on. April 2020. Never got tested. I had just completed a year of virtually no riding due to serial injuries. And then another

This past weekend was the 1 year anniversary of me having contracted Covid and then developing the blood clot I mentioned later on in the thread. Good news is that despite some major life upheaval that is unrelated to the virus, my health has been 100% ever since I recovered from the clot. Or at least as much as it can be with a toddler who gives me a cold every other week.

Good to hear. I've been seeing lots of group rides on the MTT runs this year. We might have crossed paths. Also seeing plenty of flat bar roadies trying to hang with the drop bar groups. On the 3rd of this month, I ran into what can best be described as an "outlaw bicycle gang/ride." It was some kind of underground ride picking up riders and causing havoc as they went. I was visiting the son at VCU when they came along on Laurel St. in front of the Landmark/Altria Theater. About 100-150 strong with some gas powered bikes as well. Cruising along on a slow roll, ignoring traffic laws and generally being unlawful towards anyone in their path. Banging on cars, making noise, etc. It was a very dangerous situation for drivers and pedestrians in the area. Have you ever heard or encountered this group? It was around 2-3pm on a Sunday.

Glad the OP and other commenters are doing better.

Mounting my soapbox.

I'm a Respiratory Therapist that works for the Pulmonary Department at a major hospital. I can not state enough how serious Covid is from not only a public health standpoint but also a personal health standpoint.

It is many times more deadly than the flu. The single greatest thing you can do to protect yourself is get the vaccine. It has been administered BILLIONS of times.

The incidence of side effects is tiny.

If your research is a computer and a cell phone you are betting your life on that information. My information comes from our nations leaders in infectious diseases, pulmonary diseases and vaccine development. I have spent hour upon hour sine the beginning of the pandemic listening to lectures, reading peer reviewed scholarly papers and consulting with published specialists at my own hospital.

Your chances of getting the virus, being sickened by the virus, being hospitalized by the virus or dying from the virus are many thousands of times (1 per 86,000 IIRC) less likely to happen if you have been vaccinated. If American's had this attitude in the 40's we would still have Polio and would have lost WW2. Kids have to have MMR and others to go to school. Soldiers have to have a host of vaccines to serve. Why the uproar over this one

It's been politicized is why.

Stepping down from the soapbox now. Please be kind to your fellow man, small children and animals. In the end we are all in this together.

The virus does damage the lungs and reduces their ability to oxygenate the blood. There are people who a year after contracting the virus have not recovered and continue to experience headaches, fatigue, and other symptoms. Of course a year ago there was no vaccine available and so except for the idiots going into public indoor spaces without a mask, it was not self-inflicted as is the case at this time. Check on "long haulers" for more information on legitimate medical websites.

My now ex-girlfriend (hence the "major life upheaval" comments) lives right next to the VMFA on Boulevard, we'd hear packs of idiots on gas-powered bikes and mopeds cruising around in enormous groups every Sunday. I just think it's a thing in the Fan, they can be extremely obnoxious and dangerous. Seen plenty of dirt bike riders doing wheelies through the fan going 4 times the speed limit.

Sounds like the group I came across.

Life's throwing you one curve after another. Hang in there. If you're looking again, you know the old saying. The quickest way to get over somebody is to get under somebody. Plenty of them in the RVA to choose from.

On that same weekend, some of the Sunday runners came upon someone in the Byrd Park area that had hung him/herself. The EMTs were working on the body as the runners went past.

I tested positive for Covid 3 weeks ago tomorrow. I was vaccinated as is my wife and we both still got it. I do think the vaccine helped reduce the symptoms and would not want to experience Covid "full force". I still have a lingering cough although it is getting better but don't feel comfortable getting back on my bike yet. I will probably give it another week and then hit the trainer to start rebuilding my cardio endurance.

My biggest worry with covid from the beginning are those 2.3 days you are spreading it around before you get symptoms if any. Truly that makes it a weaponized virus till proven otherwise,

The vaccine:
1. Dramatically reduces the chance of contracting Covid. The latest studies show ~70% effectiveness 120 days+ post vaccination in reducing the chance of infection.
2. Even for vaccinated people who contract Covid, the chance of serious illness or hospitalization is also greatly reduced with the latest studies showing 75%-95% effectiveness. This is even more true if you're healthy and have no pre-existing conditions.
3. Early days, but the vaccines seem to be also very effective in preventing long-term symptoms.

The data is incontrovertible. For example, here's my county's Covid dashboard:
https://www.dupagehealth.org/610/DuP...D-19-Dashboard

Note the breakout of data by vaccination status. For the 51K+ cases they've been tracking since Dec 20, 93.5% of people who contracted Covid were not vaccinated. Only ~20 people who were vaccinated and didn't have underlying medical conditions were hospitalized. None of those people died. I'll take those odds.

Had the virus a year ago in Feb. Felt better in a week, but so tired I could barely walk. To this day I have maybe 25 percent of my strength and endurance. Also have the "brain fog" where I can't remember things like some people's names that I've known. My doctors say it probably won't go away, but I'm glad I can still ride.

I can't wait for CoVid to end. I love riding to work and back. However, we have to check our temperatures before clocking in. If your temps are too high, you have to go home. So, I don't take my chances and just drive to work

I haven't been, but I've seen it and it looks tasty. I've been trying to get people to refer to Short Pump as ShoPu for a while now, it hasn't stuck yet. If NYC can do that with every neighborhood, why can't we?

Ill spread the word in Willyburg.

I've been lucky so far and also been fully vaccinated over the summer. COVID is ripping through our schools at the moment and our 9 year old tested positive at the weekend - with almost no symptoms. It was just a matter of time. But most adults here in the UK are vaccinated, which is keeping hospitalisations and death rate relatively low. However, one of my wife's work colleagues and his wife decided NOT to get vaccinated and now he's finally caught it too. Hopefully he won't get very sick and recover quickly, but I have to say it was a pretty stupid decision not to get vaccinated a few months ago when he had the chance. I'm going to get my 3rd booster jab asap as the virus is lurking everywhere at the moment.
