My example can't hold a candle to the others shown here, but it is interesting. This the 1974 Cinelli that I got from the original owner. It looks to me as though he had never changed either the tape or the hoods. He did do a rather nice wrapping job on the completely disintegrated hoods, using a mixture of white vinyl tape and medical dressing tape. By the way, that was white handlebar tape. Just a little bit of patina there.

I remove deteriorated hoods fast enough, I might have one on a lever off of a bike.
what I have found is a majority of the replicant gun hoods I have fail as they get extremely loose. The latest at the cable exit and the loose at the body too. Stored indoors, out of direct sun. The latest victim, only one side is in trouble. I have “dry” hands so they are not getting oil, I do not use lotion.
I bought a set of Soma fab hoods that look promising, the incorrect “graphics” are the price, when Rustines is fully up I will buy some of theirs also, waiting for Mafac half hoods in Red…

I just bought this '83 Trek 520 from a fellow yesterday...it was his father's, but it hadn't been ridden in I don't know how long. Maybe 10 years?
No rust anywhere, no tire rot, everything works, except the fungus that seemed to be growing on both brake levers...
I was ready to call my Oncologist for a prognosis.
Interesting pattern though. Wonder if it was subjected to a more stable, dry, long-term heat like in a hot attic?

The gloopy thing in my first and fourth picture, that looks so much like a crusty Shimano gum hood, is known as the Elephant's Foot, and is composed of melted firefighting sand and reactor fuel that found their way out of the core as a sort of lava, before solidifying into the formation you see here. Some also went through various pipes, which are also pictured. The Elephant's Foot is the most famous of the formations. It is still highly radioactive, but it's not contaminating any groundwater because it's stopped on a cement pad in a lower level of the plant.
