Hi All,

Could anyone manage to put an IGH (internal Gear HUB) into a fixie frame? I do not mean the 3 speeds one.
The problem is that
- the IGH LDO is 127 or 135 or more,
- while the fixie frame has 120mm. (On top of that the frame is ALU, where expansion/pull out is not that healthy).

I'm curious on modification of Alfine or Nexus, or any other. at least 7 speeds IGH.

I don’t think so. I have a Shimano Nexus 7 speed IGH set up in a frame with 130mm dropout spacing, and at best I see the possibility of reducing the OLD by maybe 5mm with a thinner hex nut on the NDS. If it were a steel frame you could safely spread the dropouts by 5mm, but I would not recommend doing this with an aluminum frame. However, there may be some older Sturmey-Archer 4 or 5 speed IGHs that might fit.

Not an Alfine, but there are other options for hubs that are made to fit your OLD. Sturmey Archer is my first thought. Shimano might make some of their Nexus (less expensive cousin of Alfine) hubs to fit as well. The number of combinations of OLD, brake style, number of speeds Shimano offers are crazy. I don't know a place that actually stocks them, though.

It looks like there were some issues that were not resolved. However, your next post is spot on.

A Nexus 7 can go to 126 or (maybe) a bit narrower. All you trade is the ability to use the brake fitment. Keep the cover in place, swap the axle nuts for thinner versions & go wild.

Thanks! I just skimmed the post. If you do a google search there have been several attempts to do this and documented here on the forum. It is an interesting challenge for sure.

I put a Shimano Alfine 8 135mm OLD in a SE Lager hi-ten steel frame by cold-setting the dropouts from 120mm to 135mm. Rode that for 3 years no issues but I definitely would not recommend it. Especially not with aluminum.

Unless your dead set on keeping your current frame, there are other, better suited frames with horizontal/reverse/semi dropouts with 135mm spacing (think Surly, All City)

Check the archives. Nashcommguy asked the same question and a guy had put a dt fricton shifter in the rack boss. He said it worked a bomb. He used an old Sturmey-Archer IGH. This would have been about 2011. Maybe earlier. I seem to recall he cold set the seat stays to accommodate the hub.

I contacted Sturmey, and unfrotunately the producion of that has been already stopped"IGH 8-spd are out of our program."

Yes, my frame is ALU, so cold setting to 135 is not an option :-(

I already checked the nexus 7, (it was a coaster brake version, and on that there was no possibility to bring it more narrow. :-( Possibly another version...

I think I'd checked all the Shimano and Sturmey variations and none of them was available in 120mm OLD. (1 Sturmey seemed to be OK, but the production is stopped). :-(
