Motobecane Super Mirage tube changes
What year did Moto stop making the Super Mirages with the 2040 tubing and the cool fluted stays and good chrome? I currently own two of those frames.
I know they started cutting corners to stay competitive, and been seeing a bunch of Super Mirages on Craiglslist that are just 1040 , and are probably just a Mirage frame with some slightly better components, different paint, or whatever. The 2040 one I just got has the nice saddle and the cool "Faux Leather" bars with the brake hoods. It also had really nice double walled Weinmann wheels with real Normandy hubs . Gorgeous frame, Lemon Meringue yellow, blue stripes.
Also is there a system like Raleigh had to determine the year of production from the serial number? Thanks.

Despite the nice details on the bike described, I think it's still considered an "entry level" model, especially as it has the 2040 high tensile carbon steel spec tubeset. It's kind of the main line item, when determining its fair market value.
I think it could definitely bring in a bit more money than say, a typical Peugeot UO8, but not by much....
Maybe 250 bucks max in mint, still in the box, unridden condition. Quite a bit less for a good rider condition example ($150 max).

Here is a list of Motobecane catalogs. Hopefully you can find your frame in there somewhere. In some years I would say the Super Mirage was mid-level.

They list a color called Champagne Gold. Otherwise a lot of black and red over the years.
