Am I seeing things or is that derailleur held on with electrical tape?

he he Not quite, but good eye. The elec tape is so that the der doesn't make so much noise when it knocks against the chain stay.
I figure, the rattier that train-station beater bike looks, the more likely it will be left alone.

Sunny and low 60s = 63 miles north of Long Grove.

Apparently, it's Osage Orange season - they're all over the place!



They create a slick spot when they get smushed. The range in size from baseball to 16-inch softball.



Oddly, my wife wants to grow one, so I toted a specimen home in jersey pocket.



Past peak on the fall color. Several hard frosts in the last week are moving things along.



I love this sign! I believe it's a relic from earlier times, since the road is flat as a pancake. I believe the car is modeled after a 1976 Mercury Comet.





Little foggy from the time change, but glad for nice wx this late in the season.

Good weather today,; after a cool start, mostly sunny with the temp climbing to 66 during my 75 miler.
It''s birthday week, so I decided to do the b-day ride amount plus some extra, since the weather turns cold and rainy in few days. Fresh pot of French roast and some pastry items from a Danish bakery afterwards.

Local loop...King Ridge. Thru redwoods, oak woodlands, open pastures then a drop to the Pacific and the mouth of the Russian River. Perfect Fall day with an old friend.

The bike lanes are full of wet, slippery leaves right now, so I thought I’d poke around and figure out a detour I’d had my eye on for a while. It led me alongside a major freeway, but I didn’t have to ride in traffic. I was pushing my bike up a stair in the trail, and thought, “Why is it dry here?” It was dry because I had a giant roof over my head!



I was under an I-5 cloverleaf, and I have to say, the spaces were really cool, if somewhat noisy.



A beautiful section of trail with I-5 roaring by, thirty away. I forgot to reset my brain clock, left a little late, and made it back home around sunset.

Was out on the Des Plaines River Trail yesterday with a local group. The forest north of Beck Lake was lovely, everything yellow. (Sorry, no pix. The group stops for nothing and I was too focused on avoiding hidden roots to attempt a photo while in motion.)

Spaghetti Legs 

My rides for the past couple of weeks have been pretty uninspiring. 2 days ago was my first of the season in full cold weather gear but sunshine is here and temps nudged up to the 70 mark, soI headed out to NW Albemarle County for a mostly gravel ride.Pleased to see that still a lot of color left in the trees. 35 miles on the nose with 3 feet short of 3000 climbing. Arms or sore after a near crash: fastish gravel descent and I spotted a deep rut that might endo me and as I prepared to jump it, I spotted another about 3 feet past it, so strained every muscle in my torso to jump like I never had and safely made it across.



Neely discovered road with fantastic views. At the foot of the mountains is Innisfree Village. A beautiful community supporting adults with intellectual disabilities.

Ham Sammich to fuel up for Slam Gate Rd at that stop sign. Lots of up and down to that one.

Yesterday 22 riders did the 8th Stalen Ros Turf Toertocht. A 'free' ride with old cyclocross bikes in the south of the Netherlands.
I cannot give pictures from ridin', the first picture was the easy part, hope you'll understand.

Nice weather, nice people, great bicycles and only three flat tyres at exact the same time and place (hidden iron).We had a very pleasant day.

My sweetie and I took the tandem out for a morning run, 32 miles. Plenty of sunshine, cool air, minimal traffic.

The big spiders are out at Fern's General Store. Also a new vintage truck.

I typically do a 20 miler when I can and have posted some pics along the way. Most notably along Lee Dr with the cannon in the pics.
Lee Dr has be chip sealed and is a mess to drive. Thank you National Park Service. It was a real dis service to bicycle riders who have used it a lot.
That is part of the reason it is a 20 miler instead of a 30.
As I was riding into town, Fredericksburg, I though I should take some pics to share with you. The Chatham bridge was recently opened after being closed for a year as it was rebuilt. It now has a MUP path, which is good but on the wrong side. Crossing a busy road is a dicey effort. Guess it would not have mattered which side it is on but one on each side half the width would have been better.
So the first pic is from the middle of the bridge looking down Rappahannock river at the rail road bridge. Amtrak, VRE and CSX trains use it to get across headed north and south. Just to the right is the train station. Should get a picture of that! To the left of the bridge, between bridges is the boy hood home of George Washington, Ferry Farm. This is where he did not cut the cherry tree down. On the right is the edge of downtown Fredericksburg. On the other side of the train bridge is where the lower part of the docks were when this was a major port. The rest of the docks were between the bridges.

This next pic is a bit rough but it gives you the topographical context of Chatham house across the river. There is a road at the base of the hill on the other side that floods a couple of times each year. The pocket in the foreground is always flooded at the same time. For reference, we had a flood a couple of years ago that was halfway up the arches of the train bridge. What is significant of this pic is that this is the view Lee's army had of the Burnsides troops. Burnside had about 100 cannon on the hill in front of Chatham that bombarded the citizens of Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg was the first city that Lincoln commanded that the army attack the general populace and destroy their homes and the town.

This next picture is where the northern pontoon bridge crossed the Rappahannock in the battle of Fredericksburg. You can read the sign for details. There are a pair of Bald Eagles that next near this stretch and are seen often . The fish the river.

This is Mary Washington's grave marker and memorial. There is an outcropping of rocks behind it where it is said that she prayed for George during the war on a regular basis. This is on, you guessed it, Washington St!

This is, once again from other posts, the Fredericksburg canal. The MUP goes along its full length. Used primarily for power for mills. Early on, it was the way around the falls above Falmouth and provided a way to get goods down river from the west.

These pics were taken a couple of days after a medium rain fall of about 1.65" in a 24 hour period. When it is in a normal state, you would see rocks. People like to kayak and ride innertubes when it is a bit lower. We also experience high and low tides.

From the train station headed west is an old train spur that has been converted to a MUP. This is along that trail. Yean I know there are other posts of the same but the difference is this is with the Pinarello and not the De Rosa!

This is the end of the paved section of the VCR trail, my turning around point and the end of this lengthy post! Rout 1 is US 1 that was the north/south road prior to interstates highways. Also known as the Jefferson Davis HWY in some parts south of the Mason Dixon line!
