Today's Rouvy Recommendation

Rode the "Arches National Park" ride yesterday, and the scenery is really nice, but the ride is a butt-kicker. I got passed a lot. ;-)

https://my.rouvy.com/virtual-routes/detail/89633

I ride Zwift as well, but it's nice to have this alternative.

i like rouvy but i find the average grade attribute useless. i'd rather see an average grade for ascents only. i think i could pick a route much better that way. not looking forward to starting this up again in winter but glad it is there regardless.

something else I noticed; the grades are harder in Rouvy. I think this may be due to the "trainer difficulty" setting in Zwift. No such control in Rouvy so it must just land at 100%.

right, i think teh zwift default is/was 50%. once i learned about that i set it to 100 since that is the setting in real life. i'm told the work done is the same regardless of the setting but it does not make sense to me.

I change the TD setting in Zwift to suit me and my gear. Nothing more to it than that, really. BTW, I did find a setting in Rouvy called "real life simulation" or something like that. I haven't tried it out yet but I think it's their version of the TD setting.

I hear ya. right now i don't need the help but i will be glad it is there when i do. and good to know rouvy has a similar setting. i'll check it out when i re-up my subscription.

by the way, i used to live in connecticut and later nashua, new hampshire. familiar with your area. hotter here i think but much less humidity which makes riding so much more pleasant. but you have trees to ride under.

Yeah there is a setting in Rouvy for gradient realism. Default is 100%. Zwift default is 50% so climbs feel easier with default settings. But in any case your avatar speed is dependent on your power output, so the setting really only affects your gearing. I have Rouvy and Zwift set to 100% and gradients feel the same in both.

PeteHski. do you recall if rouvy has the setting at 100 for descents as well? i know zwift sets descents to 50 even if TD is set to 100.

Sorta, but reducing trainer difficulty reduces the amount of shifting you need to do. Also, potentially with a steep enough gradient, if your trainer bike doesn't have low enough gearing, at 100% you'll be grinding at 60rpm, but with 0% trainer difficulty you can spin away at whatever cadence you want, and unrealistically stay upright while you're only moving at 2mph.

Always at 100 % as I ride to Marian my health.
Can not turn down the reality in the real world.

True, but my "real world" is on screen in front of me now. So I adjust the TD setting so I can maintain a comfortable cadence. Nice to have that option. I've settled on somewhere around 70% on both platforms. Honestly, given the number of gearing options I have on the Tacx bike it's a little bewildering. Change the gearing? Change the TD setting? Both? You can drive yourself crazy overthinking it.

Also depends on where your IRL riding is. Some of the virtual world/routes have gradients not found in some locales, so trainer difficulty setting can help I suppose in emulating your own geography.

I rode the "Hawaii Downhill" route. It's a hoot. 35 miles downhill with a very few rises along the way. You wanna go fast? This is the place.

I am trialing Rouvy, based in large part what is in this thread (esp. the o.p. -- thank you).

Today I did a ride that I frequently do in real life, to compare. I think somewhere around 75% is giving me a realistic simulation, although I noticed the sharp steep climbs were easier than in reality.

The other weird thing is I think the video was made a month or two before a large regional fire burned through, so seeing some trees and structures that are no longer here was kind of eye-opening.

I also did the Arches National Park ride. It has been quite awhile since I did it in real-space, but from what I remember, the real thing is vastly harder.

Rouvy is always working to make their rides more realistic.

Here is a video I did of a feature on their new companion app.

The BB software auto-translates a youtube link into an embedded video, but the quote might protect what was originally there (or prevents nested embedding).

is this any different from a year ago? it looks the same to me, even your guy was doing the odd pushups too.

i decided to use FulGaz this season instead of Rouvy. a week and a half in and i canceled, going back to Rouvy in a week. just too many things about FulGaz that i do not like and i did like Rouvy.

The riders are in a 360 video file now. You can change the view. A remove the elements of the UI from the screen.
