Early 90's Specialized Epic - steel?
This one has been languishing on marketplace for a couple of weeks and it is my size . 600 tri color with dual pivot brakes and DT shifters suggests to me it is between '90 and '92 -- an this is the best pic on there showing the complete bicycle
However - my recollection of the Epic lineup was that it was bonded carbon with aluminum lugs and that the lugged steel bikes were the Allez lineup. Asking price is reasonable but not a giveaway price either ($300 ) and i might be compelled to make a reasonable offer if i could be re-assured that such an animal actually existed
thanks in advance for any input

I'd be checking date codes. Even in 1989, the Epic was lugged carbon. Base offer on what the components are worth to you. They do look clean. Me, I'm more like $200.
I would consider it not being lugged carbon to be a PLUS. Lugged carbon Epic came out in 1988.

I've got several 600 tri color build kits i stumbled upon while building out my recent MArin road project --- i dont really need the parts, but My main interest was if this was an upper tier Allez frame for the period that was labelled an Epic, as i have kept a spot open for an Allez for a while now .
Ive seen a couple of Specialized catalog scans on Retrobike and i saw the same thing -- all Epics were lugged carbon. Makes me wonder if this is a unicorn , or possibly something a little older but with updated brakes

Found a pic of another steel Epic -- somewhat satisfying my curiosity that this isnt some other frameset that somebody just applied some decals to (Nashbar and Performance both used to sell unbadged Ishiwata framesets IIRC --- )
My curiosity is piqued (Edit : I guess if i go look at this one i'll just bring a magnet --- i've looked at all the RetroBike catalogs - which are in German - and there just are not any steel Epics, --- however, there are some solid painted ones that definitely look the part --- Mind bottling )

It does look legit for a OS lugged steel Specialized these weren't made very long 87/88 pretty sure they were only made for a year or a so before Specialized switched to Aluminum or Carbon for most models,a lot if not most of the components have been changed.. I would say the price is just OK if you like want can use the iIffy ? bar setup. fi9gure a $100 parts and some work to sort this out if buying,
